  1. An implementation ofDistributed TETRA over IP Erick BourdinTHALES Land & Joint Systems

  2. Outline • The basics of TETRA over IP • An Open and Modular architecture • Dispatching & Recording • Gateways • Multimedia Application Programming Interface • Summary

  3. Radio sites Site Control Units ReferenceData Base IP Network (LAN, WAN, SL, etc…) Gatewayto other Networks Recording Dispatching DataProcessing The basics of TETRA over IP (ToIP)Line Switch vs IP RoutingCentralised vs Distributed Radio sites Dispatching Recording To other Networks Data Processing Switching Centre

  4. A typical ToIP architecture diagram X21, G703Frame Relay, ATM ...

  5. PABX gateway RADIO SITE RADIO SITE RADIO SITE PABX gateway NMWS IP BACKBONE RADIO SITE NMWS Dispatcher Single site Network AVL Play Back NMWS Regional Network NMS Dispatcher Region 2 Region N Region 1 IP BACKBONE Nation wide Network A highly modular architecture

  6. IP BACKBONE PSTN PABX GSM NMWS RECORDER DISPATCHER MAMC An open architectureIP Networking, Mobility DB distribution as well as unified TETRA stack allow the integration of multiple vendor Base Stations into a single Network

  7. Dispatching Workstation • DWS seen as a TETRA subscriber • Dynamic ITSI allocation at login • All ongoing CALL Monitoring • Transmits / receives SDS • Access to DGNA • Subscriber Localisation • Emergency call • Dispatcher profiles • Internal Tetra voice coding ITSI Disp1 ITSI Disp2 FLEET 1 LAN TETRA ToIP NETWORK ITSI Disp3 ITSI Disp4 FLEET 2 ToIP LAN WAN ITSI Disp5 REMOTE DISPATCHER

  8. Recording Station(s) Recorder • Direct Tetra Uplane packets recording, • Full Call data (CDR) storage, including TPIs, localisation, • Recorder database administration • “Recorders by fleet” architecture • Multiple replay stations capability • Tetra voice codec embedded intothe replay station • Access to recorded communications by all possible criteria: calling/called Pty, Talking party, Priority, localisation, date, etc ... Replay Station FLEET 1 Recorder ReplayStation LAN ToIP FLEET 2 TETRA ToIP NETWORK LAN ToIP WAN REMOTE Player

  9. Gateways - PABX, PSTN, SDS, ... In a TETRA over IP network • A gateway is seen as a Base Station • Gateways can be located anywhere in the network • GW subscribers, PABX subscribers, Dispatchers, etc... are processed as radio subscribers TETRA over IP provides several benefits => Tetra/PABX numbering scheme association, => Call forwarding between MS and external subscribers, => Group call from outside the TETRA network => Emergency call, pre-emption, call queuing available

  10. IP DATA Gateway • Provides for IP Over Tetra • Mobile internet • IP address migration • IP/ITSI management • More than a “simple” client / server : both way connection Mail server TETRA ToIP NETWORK

  11. MultimediaApplication Programming Interface Radio sites • MAPI is the foundation of Tetra Over IP applications • Dispatchers, • Recorder, • Gateway, • AVL, • C2... • MAPI provides access to the TETRA services for third party applications Base station Control Units ReferenceData Base IP Network (LAN, WAN, SL, etc…) MAPI MAPI MAPI MAPI Recording Gatewayto other Networks Dispatching DataProcessing

  12. MultiMedia Application Programming Interface MAPI Client / server connection (login, logout,) Voice services (Individual call, Group call…) Data transfers with terminals (SDS…) Tetra supplementary services Dynamic group assignment, Priority management, Emergency call, Integrated ToIP digital recording & Re-play... Network management oriented services Call data records acquisition, Faults reports, • MAPI is the foundation of Tetra Over IP applications • Dispatchers, • Recorder, • Gateway, • AVL, • C2... • MAPI provides access to the TETRA services for third party applications

  13. Several ToIP Systems are Operational • Dunkerque Municipality Serviceslate 2000, 3 sites, 170 Terminals, • Ecuador Armed ForcesAug 2001, 13 sites, 300 Terminals • UN Forceslate 2001, 3 sites, 100 Terminals • Gibraltar Security Services (Gibtel)Sept 2002, 5 sites, 350 Terminals • French Armed forces in Senegal, D’jibouti and Tchad2003/2004, 8 fixed sites, 3 Transp. Sites, 800 Terminals • Electricity Distribution / SCADA Areva/Sonelgaz Algeria2004, 30 sites, 1100 Terminals • TetraStar PAMR Denmark2004/2005, 60 sites >> about 100 sites, • Southern France Highways2005, 70 sites,

  14. Conclusion • TETRA over IP is a field proven architecture • TETRA over IP is an open platform for system integration • TETRA over IP is the right combination of state of the art mobile communication and computer technologies
