  1. Act 4- Descent into Madness • Why are the Weird Sisters so named? • “Weird” comes from “wyrd” which means fate • What Norse and Greek characters are similar to the Three Weird Sisters? • The Fates • Clotho – spun the threads of life • Lachesis- measures the threads of life • Atropos- cut the threads

  2. Descent • Murder of Duncan • To become King • Murder of Banquo • Knew too much • Murder of Macduff’s family? • Simply a desire to hurt Macduff

  3. Legitimacy of Rule • Macbeth is the worst type of ruler – one who rules only through ambition and possesses no loyalty to the nation • A true king (Duncan, Edward) is motivated by love of kingdom more than self-interest • Macduff and Malcolm share this view. It is more important to save Scotland than themselves.

  4. Masculinity • Macduff serves as teacher to Malcolm • After the murder, Malcolm says “dispute it like a man” and Macduff responds that he has to “feel it as a man” first. • Manhood is more than aggression and ambition. Compassion, justice and kindness are necessary to become a good king.
