  3. Schedules • Specials 2:35 – 3:25 • Music • Art • P.E. • Challenge - Thursday

  4. Snacks • Snack time will be daily at 10:00 a.m. • It should be a healthy finger food and not full of sugar. • Water in a reclosable bottle is allowed in the classroom.

  5. Recommended Snacks* • Dried fruit • Crackers • Grapes • Raisins • Cheese sticks • Pretzels * Items such as these will be safe for our carpet.

  6. Recess Procedure For safety reasons, the whistle is used as a signal to all students at recess. • 1 Whistle – Students stop, take a knee, and listen. • 2 Whistles – Students can resume play/activities. • 3 Whistles – Students immediately stop activities and line up in designated area.

  11. Discipline Rules: • Be respectful to yourself and others. This can be done by using kind words to others and when talking about yourself and others. • Be safe. Please keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • Be responsible. Come to each class prepared with your assignments and the necessary materials in hand.

  12. Discipline Consequences: • Warning • Mark on Expectation Card • Student conference with teacher and parent will be contacted. • Parent and teacher conference. • Administrative Referral.

  13. Discipline Rewards: • The students may receive “tickets” in the classroom. The tickets may purchase: • Pencil (5 tickets) • Stinky Feet Pass (10 tickets) • Eat with a Friend Pass (20 tickets) • Homework Pass (30 tickets) • Affirmations • Ranger Rah Rah’s (these will go toward a classroom point system)

  14. Discipline Expectation Card: • If a student earns a mark on their expectation card, we ask that you sign and return the card the following morning. • If an expectation card is lost during the nine weeks, the student will receive an N in organization on the report card.

  15. Expectations Communication Folders: • Each Thursday we will send home a communication folder. • Please discuss the contents with your student. • Sign and return the folder Friday morning. • Regardless of behavior, expectation cards are sent in the communication folder.

  16. Canvas • 5th Grade e-news will be posted every Thursday on Canvas beginning in a couple of weeks. • Further information will be sent home in your student’s Thursday folder. Stay tuned!

  19. Helpful Hints As parents you can: • Ask to look at your child’s planner nightly. • Have your child organize his/her materials weekly. • Take time to talk with your child daily about their day. • Check supplies throughout the year and replenish as needed.

Change of Transportation Getting your child home safely is our top priority! • Please send transportation changes in writing with your child in the morning, so that we can let the office know of the change. • Our phones do not allow outside calls during the school day. If you have an emergency, please contact the front office at 281.234.0100. • Teachers are not allowed to accept a change of transportation via email.

  21. From Our School Nurse… We love healthy children! • Please keep sick children at home! Keeping your sick child at home prevents the spread of colds/flu/stomach bugs and keeps the rest of the class healthy. • If your child has fever of 100.4 or higher, or vomiting/diarrhea, they must stay at home until they are completely symptom free for 24 hours. • Your child should also stay home with pink eye until they have been on the antibiotic drops 24 hours.

  28. Reading The fifth grade students will have the opportunity to read a variety of genres throughout the upcoming year.  Students will be visiting the library once a week.

Reader’s Workshop Reader’s Workshop is a framework that includes the use of mini lessons, read alouds, authentic independent reading, individual conferencing, small group instruction, and goal-setting to become more engaged with reading. The goal of Reader’s Workshop is for students to become life long readers.

  30. Reading Log/Reader’s Notebook Students are required to read 30 minutes each night at home. They will keep track of the pages they read in their reading log inside their Reader’s Notebook. Students are also required to record their thoughts about what they are reading in their Reader’s Notebook. This process will be required as homework throughout the entire school year.   34. Writer’s Workshop Writer’s workshop is designed to scaffold students into becoming sophisticated and independent writers. The framework of writer’s workshop includes mini lessons, independent writing, conferencing, and sharing.

  37. Social Studies • Students will keep an Interactive Student Notebook (ISN). • The ISN will be updated weekly. All assignments should be glued in ISN, and it will serve as a study guide for tests.
