Common Core State Standardshttp://www.corestandards.org/ • English Language Arts (ELA) • Learn about the development and content of the ELA Common Core State Standards. • Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmLElb7yHDU (0:00 – 7:00) • Math • Learn about the development and content of the Math Common Core State Standards • Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlJ44te7jrw (Begin at 2:49 to 5:37; .6:11-7:53).

  3. 2013 and 2014 READY EOG Testing • Created by the North Carolina Department of Education. • Administered in the last quarter of the school year. • Subjects • Math – 3rd-8th Grades • Language Arts – 3rd-8th Grades • Science – 5th, 8th Grades • Standards • Common Core State Standards in Math and English Language Arts (http://www.corestandards.org/) • North Carolina Science Essential Standards (http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/new-standards/) • Question Type: • Multiple Choice • Gridded Response (5th- 8th Grade Math only) • Technology Enhanced (5th and 8th Grade Science only) • Sample Items will be released in late winter/early spring 2013. http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/releasedforms

  4. CommonExam: Science, Social Studies • In addition to the EOGs in Math and Language Arts in 3-8 and the Science EOG in 8th grade, students in grades 4,6, and 7 will take a Common Exam in Science.  Students in 4,5,6,7, and 8 will take a Common Exam in Social Studies.  We do know that these tests WILL include performance tasks that will be assessed by teachers at our school.  These will be statewide common assessments developed by teachers and based on the NC Essential Standards.  We do not know the administration details about these tests (when, in what language, how lengthy these tests will be, % of the Essential Standards on the tests, etc)

  5. LANGUAGE ARTS • How can I prepare for the EOG? • Pay attention in class! • Complete all of your assignments! • Study your notes each night! • READ, READ, READ! Reading 10 minutes a day can lead to 800 new vocabulary words a year! • Go to the NCDPI (http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/) website to learn more and to take EOG tests that have been released from years past! • Regularly check in on Mrs. Oleksiak’s wiki page for updated information and important handouts (http://6thela.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/)

  6. MATH • The North Carolina Standard Course of Study has been replaced in the 2012 2013 school year by the Common Core standards. The Common Core standards are used in 45 states, and provide an opportunity for collaboration among states, and with organizations and universities across the country.

  7. Common Core Standards In 6th Grade • 6 RP - Ratios and ProportionalRelationships • Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoningtosolveproblems. • 6 NS - TheNumberSystem • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and divisionto divide fractions byfractions. • Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. • Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

  8. Common Core Standards In 6th Grade • 6 EE - Expressions and Equations • Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. • Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. • Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

  9. Common Core Standards In 6th Grade • 6G - Geometry • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. • 6SP - Statistics and Probability • Develop understanding of statistical variability. • Summarize and describe distributions.

  10. MathematicalPractices • They are consistent in every grade: • 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • 4. Model with mathematics. • 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. • 6. Attend to precision. • 7. Look for and make use of structure. • 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  11. EOG Math Test 2013 • This year, the 6th Grade EOG Math test will consist of Multiple Response Questions, as it has in the past, but also there will be Gridded Response Questions.

  12. Multiple choice sample questions

  13. Gridded Questions Sample The scale on a blueprint of a house is 1 inch = 5 feet. On the blueprint, the length of the house is 12.5 inches. What is the length, in feet, of the actual house?

  14. Resources • Books and workbooks (English version on pearson success net) • www.discoveryeducation.com • www.studyisland.com • www.pearsonsuccessnet.com • EOG practice book • STUDY DAILY

  15. Science Objectives • Earth’s Surface-Geology • Space-Solar system and how it affects our lives. • Matter: Properties and Change • Energy- Energy transfer through organisms and potential and kinetic. • Waves, Sound, Light • Plants and Photosynthesis • Ecology-Relations between organisms in an ecosystem. (Students had this last year. This year will be a review and we will build on their prior knowledge.)

  16. SCIENCE • Science will have a Common Exam for 6th grade. It will cover all the 6th grade objectives. • To prepare students have been creating science notebooks/ binders with information they can use to study. • Also starting in February/ March students will begin Study Island in science. This is a wonderful tool for students to use at home to practice objectives/concepts. This will be a homework grade.

  17. SOCIAL STUDIES Skills The learner will acquire strategies for reading social studies materials. The learner will acquire strategies to analyze, interpret, create, and use resources and materials. The learner will acquire strategies needed for applying decision-making and problem-solving techniques both orally and in writing to historic, contemporary, and controversial world issues. The learner will acquire strategies needed for effective incorporation of computer technology in the learning process.

  18. SOCIAL STUDIES • Content: The learner will apply social studies concepts to the Ancient World. History, geography, the economics , the governments, and the culture s of great ancient world civilizations. RESOURCES: Teacher Wiki and the following sites as applied to each ancient world unit. www.classzone.com www.discoveryeducation.com

  19. ESPAÑOL • MAGNET CONTINUATION DEPENDS UPON THE LEVEL OF SPANISH PROFICIENCY; IN OTHER WORDS, YOUR CHILD MUST PASS THEIR SPANISH CLASS IN ORDER TO STAY AT COLLINSWOOD (6-8). • Skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. • Content: verbs, adjectives, grammar, vocabulary, etc. • Skills = Practice • Content = Study • RESOURCES: • www.studyspanish.com • www.livingspanish.com

  20. 2012-2013 Promotion Criteria • Promotions will be determined by: • Prior Year EOG results • Evidence of work that consistently meets and/or exceeds Common Core and NC Essential Standards in all content areas. • Passing grades in all core classes. • Middle School Spanish: • To maintain attendance at CLA, students must have a passing grade in the Spanish language class. • EOC final exam is 25% of the Spanish final grade. • Honors placement will be determined by a combination of: • Evidence of time management and work completion • Evidence of quality work that meets and/or exceeds Common Core and NC Essential standards. • Accuplacer Test (Math Only) • Prior year EOG results • Teacher Recommendation

  21. 2014-2015 Summative Testing • Created by the Smarter Balanced Consortium (http://www.smarterbalanced.org/) • Subjects: • Math (Grades 3-8, 11) • Language Arts (Grades 3-8, 11) • Standards: Common Core State Standards • Question Type: • Computer Adaptive • Performance Task • Sample Items: (Scroll to bottom) • http://www.smarterbalanced.org/sample-items-and-performance-tasks/
