  1. Finding research topics in:CQ Researcher

  2. To search CQ Researcher, I will need to start at the Rod Library Homepage.http://www.library.uni.edu/

  3. I will then select Databases A-Z under Journal and Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler) from the Main Menu.

  4. I then can then select the CQ Researcher database I need from the alphabetical listing.

  5. This is the search screen for CQ Researcher.

  6. For this demonstration, I will be looking for a research topic which has more than one point of view.

  7. I will start by looking at the Recent Reports that CQ Researcher has assembled on the first page. Since I am a Spanish major, I would like a topic related to a Spanish-speaking country. Neither the Recent Reports nor the Current Repot seem to relate to my topic.

  8. I will click on Browse by Topic from the menu at the left.

  9. I now have an list of topic areas from which to choose. Since I want something from a Spanish-speaking country, I don’t think this list will help. What else can I try?

  10. I will type in Spanish in the Quick Search box in the left menu and click on Go.

  11. The topics I have called up have each been given a Score according to their relevancy to the topic word “Spanish.”

  12. If I wanted to look at the most recent issues first, I could click on the “up” arrow (under Date) and the issues will be rearranged according to date.

  13. After looking at the topics offered, I have decided to investigate the first one Puerto Rico’s Status. I know that that country has been talking about gaining statehood. I will click on this topic.

  14. After clicking on Puerto Rico’s Status , the first thing I see is the Abstract. Reading this will tell me if this is something in which I am interested. This topic looks promising.

  15. I notice the gray bar at the top has many options I can click on. All of the Topics in CQ Researcher have these options. These options can also be printed out by clicking on the printer icon or PDF icon in the upper right corner, or emailed to me by selecting that icon.

  16. Since I need more information than an Abstractcan provide, I will click on Overview to get more in-depth information.

  17. I know that Puerto Rico has been debating whether to become a state or not for some time. I am sure this topic will have more than one point of view. I will click on Pro/Con in the gray bar at the top.

  18. Clicking on Pro/Con takes me to a page which shows me two points of view: the view for Statehood and the view for remaining a Commonwealth.

  19. Now that I have identified a topic with more than one point of view I can start to look for more information.

  20. Next, I will select the Background of this issue to see how it started.

  21. I also want to look at the Chronology to see when the major events associated with this issue occurred.

  22. I can also look at the Current Situation, however, I will need to look for more recent information to bring this topic up-to-date as this issue is from 1998.

  23. I see that a Bibliography is included. I will print that off and see if I can find any of the sources included here in UNISTAR.

  24. I will need to update my material by doing a search for periodical and newspaper articles which have been more recently published. I will ask a librarian what databases are most likely to index periodical and newspaper articles on Puerto Rican statehood. I can also try to find books newer than 1998 in UNISTAR.Typing in the word “Spanish” will bring me a list of topics to look through.

  25. CQ Researcher is a useful database to look in to find controversial issues, social issues, and background information on topics quickly. Users may need to consult additional resources for in-depth research or to bring this information up-to-date.

  26. If you have any questions regarding finding research topics in CQ Researcher, please talk to a Reference librarian. We will be happy to help you!01/26/07
