These missions declined • Some Mexicicans captured Nat Amer.retaliation by Nat. tribes on tejanos • Tejanos= American and Mexican settlers of that area

  3. B. The Impact of Mexican Independence • Tejano livestock provided products for nearby territories • After indep. They tried to improve econ. By easing trade restrictions with the US • Mex. Gov’t in Mexico city not in tune w/ prob of the Texan and New Mexico settlers

  4. C. Mexico Invites US Settlers • Mexican officials invite Amer. Settlers to help settle land • Land grants offered to Empresarios who would then sell plots of land to Amer. Settlers at low price • Settlers must pledge to obey Mexican Law and become Roman Catholic

  5. D. Austin in Texas • Stephen A. Austin most successful empresario • US is determined that Texas will be profitableUS discusses expanding border to Rio Grande • Texans refuse offer to buy Texas and begins to suspect American settlers it had invited in

Settlers in Texas spoke English & Brought slaves w/ them despite the fact that Slavery was outlawed • Mexico Closed its doors to any further immigration and placed heavy tax on Amer. Goods • Austin travels to MC to present petitions for greater self gov’t in Texas • Austin is arrestedrebellions

Santa Anna of Mexico rides to Texas to enforce laws • Austin called for Texans to arm themselves • Settlers move to the Alamo= A Franciscan Mission and Fort • 12 day siege ends in Mexican victory w/ settlers slaughtered • Texas created its own constitution based on that of the US

The Lone Star Republic • Rebel commander Sam Houston surprise attacks Mexican troops near San Jacinto river under battle cry “Remember the Alamo” • Capture Santa Anna and force him to sign the Treaty of Velasco which grants indep. To Texas • Sam Houston elected pres. Of the Republic of Texas

Texans Join the Union • Most Texans hop to be annexes by the US • Annex= to incorporate • US divided on sectional lines • S wanted to extend slavery that is already established in Texas • N feared annexation would tip fragile balance in the Senate in favor of slave states • Texas eventually annexed Mexico becomes angry and recalls its ambassador from wash DC
