  5. #3: The Goal Approach • Achievement • Long-term, mid-range, and short-term planning • Goal-setting • Visualization • Self-motivation • Creating a positive mental attitude

  6. #4: The ABC Approach • Prioritization and Values Identification • Values clarification • Task ranking

  7. #5: The Magic Tool Approach • Technology • Tools (e.g. right calendar, right planner, right computer program (SPSS), right laptop computer, right handheld) help keep track of priorities, organize tasks, and more easily access key information.

  8. #6: The Time Management 101Approach • Skills • Master certain basics such as using a planner, creating “to do” lists, setting goals, delegating, organizing, prioritizing.

  10. Practical Tips onDedicating Time for Research • Plan and have an “end-goal” in mind • Schedule your priorities • Limit interruptions (e-mail, telephone, unexpected visitors, etc.) • Be organized (but be reasonable) • Don’t procrastinate

  11. Practical Tips onManaging Time • Be flexible • Delegate • Don’t attempt too much.

  12. Tips for Residency Directors • Meet with residents regularly and discuss their research projects. • Make sure residents go through the online certificate training – both parties learn about research.
