  1. Aim: How did the Hundred Years War (1337-1454) change Europe? • Why did England and France go to war? • Both nations want Aquitaine • Conflict over Succession • 1328: French King Charles IV dies without an heir, ending the Capetian line • Closest Relative: His nephew Edward III, king of England • French barons reject Edward, appoint Philip VI, start the Valois line. Bad feelings on both sides. • In 1337, Philip confiscates Aquitaine. Edward declares himself rightful heir to the French throne. War begins!

  2. The Hundred Years War (1337-1454) • Popular Response • Why did nobles and knights want to get involved in this war? Why did peasants and commoners? • Majority of the war, England has the upper hand • Battle of Crecy (1346): England wins with the longbow and the cannon • Battle of Agincourt (1415): 8,000 English troops under King Henry V defeat 50,000 French troops. Henry then conquers Normandy.

  3. The Hundred Years War (1337-1454) • Joan of Arc saves France! a. 1429: Goes to the French dauphin (Charles VII) → tells him that voices have commanded her to lead the French army to victory. b. Joan inspires the French army. Under her leadership, they win a huge victory at Orleans, start to push the English out of France. c. 1430-1431:Joan is eventually captured by the English and burned for witchcraft.

  4. Results of the War • French retake Normandy, eject the English from Aquitaine, win the war! • Enormous loss of life, money, property and trade. • Creation of the English Parliament to raise tax money. • Increase in nationalism
