  2. The Earth Our “Island” Home • The “Ancients” thought of it as a solid mass. Though they were aware of volcanoes and earthquakes, they didn’t really understand what caused them. • The reality is that the earth is a very interesting and complex entity. We know a lot more than the “Ancients” did, but we have much more yet to learn.

Important “Bucket List” Learn more about how the structure of the earth operates Treat the earth with reverence and awe because it’s been good and we have no other home Cease adding to the natural process of global warming Cease taking things out of or putting tings into the earth’s crust until we have done everything we can to ascertain the probable consequences of the proposed action. Then reevaluate the proposal and decide whether the positive consequences outweigh the negative ones. In extracting and using the natural resources of the earth, be as efficient and non-polluting as possible. Recycle reusable materials wherever possible. Use renewable resources on a sustained-yield basis. For the foreseeable future, this is the only home we humans have. it does not make sense to trash it.

  4. Earth Layers • The Earth is divided into four main layers. *Inner Core *Outer Core *Mantle *Crust

  5. The Crust The crust is only about 3-5 miles (8 kilometers) thick under the oceans(oceanic crust) and about 25 miles (32 kilometers) thick under the continents (continental crust). The crust makes up 1% of the Earth and is broken into many pieces called plates.

  7. When Oceanic and Continental Crust Meet The less dense continental plate rides up over the denser oceanic plate = subduction. The drag, or friction, of the oceanic plate being forced down and melting back into the magma caused the continental plate to “wrinkle up” forming mountain ranges containing volcanoes like the western mountains of North and South America. subduction

  9. Lithosphere • The lithosphere (geosphere) is the "solid" part of Earth. It has two parts, the crust and the upper mantle • The lithosphere “ sits on the” asthenosphere. • The Earths Plates are the lithosphere. • It is the rocky, solid portion of the crust. Remember that it is made up of mostly Silicon( Si) and Oxygen (O).

  10. The area where the crust and the mantle meet is very complicated, as they seem to overlap somewhat and asthenosphere acts as a kind of lubricating layer that assists the process of circulation of the mantle and movement of the crustal plates.

  11. Lithosphere - outer layer of rigid crustal plates • Asthenosphere – semi-solid rock that flows slowly(like hot asphalt)

  12. Asthenosphere • This is the layer below the lithosphere. This layer is “ plastic –like”. • It is somewhat solid/liquid and acts to reduce friction between the crustal plates and the mantle • You can say that it is malleable. • Very important in terms of plate tectonics.

  13. The Mantle • The mantle is the layer below the crust. • The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth. • The mantle is divided into two regions: the upper and lower sections.

  14. Outer Core * The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals. * The outer core is liquid. * The outer core is made up of iron and is very dense.

  15. Inner Core * The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move. * The inner core is a solid.

  16. Tectonic Plates • Earth’s crust is broken into about 19 pieces • These plates move on top of the asthenosphere
