Life of Abraham Lincoln • He was born on Sunday, February 12th 1809, and died April 15th 1865 at the age of fifty six. • He was born in Hardin (Kentucky) County. • His party was Republican and he was president for four years from 1861-1865, when he was assassinated. By actor and confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. • His wife was called Mary Todd Lincoln. • His only military experience had been as a three-month volunteer in a frontier Indian war. • Inspired leadership for the world.

Lincoln’s mom died from milk sickness. • He spent less than 12 months going to school, and he didn't attend college at all, he loved to read and preferred learning to working in the fields. • he studied law in his spare time and became a lawyer in 1836. • In 1846 Lincoln ran for the United States House of Representatives and won. • While in Washington he became known for his opposition to the Mexican War and to slavery. He returned home after his term and resumed his law practice more seriously than ever. Early in 1851 Lincoln's father died.

  4. in 1856 Lincoln gave his lost speech. He opposed the Dred Scott decision in 1857 and gave his famous “House divided’’ speech on June 16, 1858. • Lincoln was against the spread of slavery into the territories but was not an abolitionist. • Douglas won the Senatorial race, but Lincoln gained national recognition. In 1860 he furthered his national reputation with a successful speech at the Cooper Institute in New York.

  5. 1860, Lincoln won on the third ballot. With Hannibal Hamlin as his running mate, Lincoln was elected the 16th president on November 6, 1860, defeating Douglas, John bell, and John C. Breckinridge. • In February of 1861 the Lincolns left by train for Washington, D.C. The president-elect. • Lincoln faced the greatest internal crisis of any U.S. president. After the fall of Ft. Sumter, Lincoln raised an army and decided to fight to save the Union from falling apart.

What he did for the US history • On November 6th 1860 Lincoln was elected to become the 16th President of the U.S. • Lincoln successfully led his country through its greatest constitutional, military and moral crisis. • Abraham Lincoln responded to the crisis wielding powers as no other present before him. • He distributed $2,000,000 from the Treasury for war materiel without an appropriation from Congress.

  8. Comments from the Teacher This presentation was not very good. The student did not practice at all. Many words could not be pronounced properly, and the slides were simply read word for word. When asked to elaborate or explain a bullet point the student could offer no more details or explanation. There is way too much text and not enough pictures. This student had to revise the presentation extensively and practice their presentation in order to receive credit.
