  1. Show that the (beam size ^2) varies quadratically with distance in a drift section with no quadrupoles.

  2. What is the diffraction limited optical synchrotron light monitor vertical resolution at the KEK ATF test damping ring? • E=1.3 GeV • B= 0.7T • By what factor is the 5 nm-rad vertical emittance, 5 m beta function beam image increased?

  3. The ILC ‘RTML’ has ~ 2% energy spread,(max dispersion ~ 100mm), 50 m beta function with a 5 GeV beam. Use to estimate the beam aspect ratio. Why is it hard to measure the vertical beam size accurately? (also include 3:1 beta_x/beta_y variation expected in a reasonable lattice)

  4. Energy deposition • Single ’minimum ionizing’ particle energy deposition is 2MeV/gm/cm^2 in carbon. Find the energy deposition of a 1 um sigma nominal intensity (3.5nC) bunches in a 4 um carbon wire and estimate the temperature rise. (carbon density 2.2 gm/cm^3, specific heat 0.7 J/gm/deg_C). Assume that the specific heat is constant. Assume the beam is round. • Include the effects of latent heat of vaporization / melting (20000/300 J/gm) • Do the same for the beam at the ILC IP, • for the full number of bunches with 1 um sigma • Peak current • FEL bunch lengths can be as low as 10 um rms. Find the peak current using the nominal ILC bunch charge.

  5. From the energy loss per turn, estimate the watts/cm dissipated on the damping ring vacuum chamber surface • Given the beam delivery dipole bending radius, estimate the electron beam energy above which the critical synchrotron radiation will liberate neutrons from the surrounding material • (10 MeV)

  6. What is the shortest beam size that can be measured with the TTF bunch length monitor?

  7. Explain what happens to power flow in the ILC linac when the beam goes away

  8. The scan observed using a wire scanner is the quadrature sum of the actual beam size and the effective wire size. What fraction of the wire diameter should be used for this correction?

  9. sig_z = 25 µm E = 600 MeV sqrt(beta*beta)=51m norm emittance = 5 µm phase advance = 15 degrees phi = 0 lambda= 105 mm nominal size = 317 µm L=3.66 m V = 25 MV P=18 MW TTF Deflector Parameters
