  1. New Product and Service Development By JF

  2. What is World Health Connection? • A website that seeks to educate the global population on the latest, most relevant healthcare news by providing you with a snapshot of important healthcare headlines. • What is our mission? • To impart a better understanding of the state of healthcare around the globe and provide you with a holistic, multi-faceted understanding of this expanding and evolving field.

  3. The History of World Health Connection • The CEO of World Health Connection began the website in November 2010. • Since then, he has recruited and constructed a team of very talented young people to help run the website. • Financial Team • Marketing Team • Legal Team • Software Development Team

  4. New Project • Creating an Integrative Data Networking: Facilitating cancer research and collaboration amongst healthcare workers in sub-Saharan Africa (pilot program in Tanzania where we have contacts). • There are approximately 530,000 new cancer incidences in sub-Saharan Africa each year and almost a third of all cancer deaths are preventable. • The output of causality-focused research that correlates patients’ demographic and geographic information to genetic and environmental factors is not keeping pace with the rise of cancer incidences. • The number of research teams and collaborative research projects in hospitals is severely limited by the triaging of organizational and human resource issues above data procurement efforts.

  5. Strategy • Applying the new product and service development funnel to help us design a simple, cost-effective electronic data capture system that is focused solely on cancer research. • Healthcare workers can continue treating high volumes of patients while concurrently pursuing research goals that advance the quality of cancer care and prevention.     • “While a little more than half of all firms use some type of new product development process, 76% of ‘best process’ businesses follow a specific strategy for their NPD activities. A new process will give you better, faster, and more profitable results”. • - David Goldsmith

  6. New Product and Service Development Funnel Overview • Three Main Phases • Ideation • Elimination • Development • Screens • Ideation Screen • Surface Evaluation Screen • Detailed Evaluation Screen • Key Players • Referees • Gate Keepers

  8. Ideation • How can we generate ideas to fill our Idea bank? • Collect ideas internally (team) • Have members add ideas to a Google document • Hold monthly meetings discussing the project. • Triggers of Innovation: • Wear other people’s hats • Pose questions • Spend more mental time in the future • Storyboard ideas • Mind Mapping Ideation Ideation screen Expansion & Surface Evaluation Surface Evaluation Screen Detailed Evaluation Detailed Evaluation Screen CFD Gate Testing Gate Deployment Gate Post Launch Review Gate Cross-Functional Development Testing Deployment Launch Post Launch Review

  9. IdeationScreen • Broad Criteria: • Is the software relevant to cancer research? • Can the software store data: • Medical and socioeconomic histories, past treatment regiments and toxicities, cancer onset and progression, response outcomes, and physician case summaries. • Does software agree with company’s goals? • Is the software feasible with the available resources? (cost under $10,000) • Is the content we are collecting on this EDC system relevant? • What is the risk associated? • Referees: • Software Development Team Member • Financial Team Member • Legal Team Member • Marketing Team Member Ideation Ideation Screen Expansion & Surface Evaluation Surface Evaluation Screen Detailed Evaluation Detailed Evaluation Screen CFD Gate Testing Gate Deployment Gate Post Launch Review Gate Cross-Functional Development Testing Deployment Launch Post Launch Review

  10. SurfaceEvaluation • Conduct preliminary assessments: • Internet research, ask doctors/nurses, researchers, focus groups, cancer patients. • How can this software differentiate itself from other systems (delivery, design, market attractiveness)? • Will this software create an advantage? • Technical assessment • Outline legal assessment • Outline financial assessment (How much will building software cost?) 11. Surface Evaluation Screen • Confirmation: • Technical issues? • Is it easy to navigate? • Is it easy to troubleshoot? • Legal issues (patient privacy)? • Strategic fit? • Marketing potential, barrier to entry (will researchers be interested)? • What is the benefit to the patient/researcher? • Evaluate the risk. • Additional areas of elimination. • Referees: • Legal Team Member • Doctor • Healthcare worker • Cancer Patient in Africa • Software Development Member Ideation Ideation screen Surface Evaluation Surface Evaluation Screen Detailed Evaluation Detailed Evaluation Screen CFD Gate Testing Gate Deployment Gate Post Launch Review Gate Cross-Functional Development Testing Deployment Launch Post Launch Review

  12. Detailed Evaluation • Idea rationale • Competitive Analysis • Understanding current data systems. • Calculate growth rate of software. • Calculate size of market (cancer patients in Tanzania). • Market Investigation • Target market (who will want to use this system?) • Outline software benefits. • Outline software strategy/potential investors. • Discuss cost effectiveness (getting our money’s worth) • Estimate timeline (creating system and implementing it) • Forecast Ideation Ideation screen Surface Evaluation Surface Evaluation Screen Detailed Evaluation Detailed Eval. 13. Detailed Evaluation Screen • What is the best option? • Is the initial audience response positive? • Are the cancer statistics or trends changing? • Is $10,000 enough to create an optimal software? • Decision to commit and proceed to idea • Referees: • Financial Team Member • Software Development Team Member • Marketing Team Member • Doctor • Cancer Research Scientist Ideation Ideation screen Surface Evaluation Surface Evaluation Screen Detailed Evaluation Detailed Evaluation Screen CFD Gate Testing Gate Deployment Gate Post Launch Review Gate Cross-Functional Development Testing Deployment Launch Post Launch Review

  14. Cross Functional Development • Prototype Initiation • Outline software program (design). • Ensure that all team members have been updated on software development and their appropriate roles. • Begin legal process (file for patents or rights) or resolve any problems • Update financials • Marketing • Define a timeline • Create market launch plans • Continue to compile hospital/patient feedback • Sub NPSD processes.
