  1. The Body Systems

  2. OBJECTIVES • Students will know the body systems in the body. • Students will understand what each body system does. • Students will identify the major organs of each body system.

  3. What are the body systems in the Human Body? 1. Skeletal System 2. Integumentary System 3. Muscular System. 4. Cardiovascular System • Circulatory System 5. Digestive System. 6. Endocrine System. 7. Nervous System. • Sensory System. 8. Respiratory System. 9. Immune / Lymphatic Systems 10. Urinary System - Renal System 11. Reproductive System

  4. Name as many parts as you can of each system.

  5. Skeletal System Components The skeletal system consists of: Bones Joints Connective tissue Fun Fact: There are 206 bones in the human body.

  6. What organs are in the Integumentary System? • Skin • Hair • Nails • Exocrine glands

  7. Cardiovascular- What is it made of? The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels.

  8. Muscular System There are approximately 640 muscles in the human body. 3 Different Types of Muscle: Visceral Cardiac Skeletal

  9. What does the Sensory System consist of? A sensory system consists of: -Eyes -Ears -Nose -Tongue -Skin -Sensory receptors -Neural pathways and parts of the brain involved in sensory perception.

  10. What makes up theNervous System Brain Spinal cord Nerves

  11. What’s in the Digestive System? Mouth Esophagus Liver Pancreas Gallbladder Small Intestine Large Intestine Rectum Anus

  12. What makes up the Endocrine System? • Pituitary Gland • Hypothalamus • Pineal Gland • Thyroid Gland • Thymus • Pancreas • Adrenal Glands • Testes (Males) • Ovaries (Females)

  13. Organs in the Respiratory System Nose and Nasal Cavity Mouth Pharynx Larynx Trachea Bronchi and Bronchioles Lungs Diaphragm Internal intercostal muscles External intercostal muscles

  14. What is in the Immune/Lymphatic System?

  15. The Urinary System • Kidneys • Ureters • Bladder • Urethra

  16. The Reproductive System ismade up of… • Male: • Testes • Penis • Female: • Vagina • Ovaries

  17. Give me a brief explanation of each system.

  18. How the Skeletal System Works Skeletal System Functions  Providing support for the body  Protecting internal tissues and organs from damage  Acting as a framework for attached muscles Allowing movement of limbs and digits   Producing new red and white blood cells  Storing fat and minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus

  19. Integumentary System • What does it do?? • Its main function is to act as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world. It also functions to retain body fluids, protect against disease, eliminate waste products, and regulate body temperature.

  20. Cardiovascular System What does it do? • 1.   To transport nutrients, gases and waste products around the body • 2.   To protect the body from infection and blood loss • 3.   To help the body maintain a constant body temperature (‘thermoregulation’) • 4.   To help maintain fluid balance within the body

  21. Functions of the Muscular System The 650 muscles in the body not only support movement — controlling walking, talking, sitting, standing, eating and other daily functions that people consciously perform — but also help to maintain posture and circulate blood and other substances throughout the body, among other functions.

  22. What does the Sensory System do? A sensory system is a part of the nervous system responsible for processing sensory information.

  23. 3 Main Functions of the Nervous System Include: Collect information about the body’s external/internal states Transfer this information to the brain (to be analyzed) Send impulses out to initiate appropriate motor responses to meet the body's needs.

  24. Why do we need our Digestive System? Your digestive system is uniquely constructed to perform its specialized function of turning food into the energy you need to survive and packaging the residue for waste disposal.

  25. Functions of the Endocrine System The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood.

  26. Respiratory System does… The human respiratory system is a series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.

  27. What does the Lymphatic System do? The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body.  In other words… it fights diseases!!

  28. Functions of the Urinary System The urinary system, also known as the renal system, produces, stores and eliminates urine, the fluid waste excreted by the kidneys.

  29. Do you know what the Reproductive System does… The reproductive system is a collection of internal and external organs — in both males and females — that work together for the purpose of reproducing.

  30. Name as many diseases as you can that affect each body system.

  31. Osteoporosis Arthritis Scoliosis Diseases of the Skeletal System

  32. Diseases of theIntegumentary System • acne and warts; • chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis; • and more serious diseases like skin cancer

  33. Diseases of the Cardiovascular System -Coronary artery disease (narrowing of the arteries) -Heart attack -Abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias -Heart failure -Heart valve disease -Congenital heart disease -Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) -Pericardial disease -Aorta disease and Marfan syndrome -Vascular disease (blood vessel disease)

  34. Diseases of the Muscular System -Muscular Dystrophy -Cerebral Palsy -Myasthenia Gravis -Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis -Tendonitis -Rotator Cuff Tear

  35. Diseases of the Sensory System? • Tinnitus- Ringing of the ears. • Bell Palsy- Abrupt paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face • Color blindness- Inability to distinguish one or more of 3 colors: red, green and blue. • Cataracts- Opacity of the crystalline lens of the eye. • Conjunctivitis- Pink Eye – Inflammation of the conjunctiva • Ptosis- Dropping of the upper eyelid • Glaucoma- Increase pressure within the eye.

  36. Diseases of the Nervous System Multiple sclerosis * Stroke Alzheimer's disease * Epilepsy Parkinson’s Disease

  37. Diseases of the Digestive System? • Chest Pain: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) • Gallstones • Celiac Disease • Crohn's Disease • Ulcerative Colitis • Hemorrhoids • Diverticulitis • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  39. Respiratory System Diseases… Viruses: -influenza -bacterial pneumonia  -enterovirus respiratory virus Chronic diseases: -asthma - tuberculosis -chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  40. Diseases of the Lymphatic System enlargement of the lymph nodes (also known as lymphadenopathy), swelling due to lymph node blockage (also known as lymphedema) and cancers involving the lymphatic system. • Glandular fever -tender lymph nodes • Hodgkin’s disease - a type of cancer of the lymphatic system • Oedema - swelling caused by too much fluid in the tissues • Tonsillitis - infection of the tonsils in the throat. • PANDAS- Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections.
