  1. Goal Setting Mrs. Kruger American Lit

  2. What is a Goal? On your paper answer the following • What is a goal? • What are the qualities of good goals? • Is it better to set lower goals than to risk failure by setting higher ones?

  3. Key Factors in Goals OK, so let’s be realistic not every wish you have can be a goal. For instance, you may wish you could live and stay young forever, but since that is not realistic and you have no control over aging/death, it cannot be considered a goal. More like a fantasy….

  4. Key Factors aka Smart Goals… • Specific- it must be clearly defined. What is it? • Measurable- it must have a plan of action that you can measure your progress. How much, How many & How often? It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions. • Attainable-it has to be something that you have a reasonable chance of achieving. • Relevant-It has to be important to you! • Time- When will you complete the goal. Putting a time frame helps motivate you.

  5. Failing to plan is planning to fail! On your paper come up with a process for setting and achieving goals. This should be a step-by-step process. (should have 5 to 7 steps) Example: #1 Define your goal #2 Create an outline #3 Identify set-backs, barriers, etc..

  6. Let’s Practice Re-write 1 of the following goals and make them SMART goals (the first is done for you): Sample Goal: I will do better in school • Smart Goal: I will improve my math and science grades by 10% for the end of this term by reviewing my notes and doing my hmwkregularly. • I will save more money • I will help more around the house • I will eat better

  7. PRACTICE: GIVING ADVICE Instructions: You will be working in groups of 4. You will be given a scenario and as a group you will be required to devise (come up with) a plan for how to get from their current situation to achieving their goals. One paper for the entire group will be turned in with each members name on it. We will then see how each group compares/contrasts to how they reached the desired goal.

  8. Individual Goals • You are now required to write a goal for this class and one long term goal for high school or beyond according to the process outlined in class. • Templates will be posted on website or in class if you need to use them as a guide.
