  1. mHealth Summit Debrief “Technology always brings new challenges before it brings stability.” – Conference Participant

  2. Summit Structure Theme Tracks: Business, Policy, Research, Technology, mFinance Corporate Spotlights Super Sessions: The Value Proposition for mHealth Mobile Health in the Clinical Enterprise The New Wireless Paradigm in the Medical Device Industry Global Policy and Regulatory Perspectives of mHealth

  3. Some Thoughts and Perspectives: Diverse & Dynamic • Gaming; Diagnostic Tools; Data Collection; Mapping applications; Chronic Disease tracking • Lots of “cool factor”; • “This year two guys demonstrated an electric band-aid. This adhesive strip communicated via bluetooth the wearer's health status to a mobile phone. The bandaid can send an EKG to the phone, it can monitor hydration, breathing, and temperature as well. The user can configure alerts for any of the monitored statuses. The manufacturing cost was about 1$. They suggested that this could be used for monitoring women during pregnancy.” • Growing focus on including a patient’s support network, including family and friends as well as the physician made the biggest difference in the treatment. As we know most healthcare happens outside the clinic, mobile provides a new way to connect the patient to the provider but having support network connected as well takes some of that additional burden off the provider. • The sector is still fragmented with lots of parallel development and competing systems

  4. Some Thoughts and Perspectives: Issues Interoperability • Interoperability is still an issue at many levels. • Need for standards concerning data exchange. Issues surrounding data ownership. • Partnerships need to be forged at multiple levels. Scalability: • Common issue/challenge Sustainability: • Business models • Government leadership

  5. Some Thoughts and Perspectives: mHealth Alliance Role • mHealth Alliance presented its “relaunch” & major role in coordinating mHealth activities • mHealth Alliance has taken on a big Scope of Work to lead the interoperability umbrella as well as foster partnerships and knowledge sharing on HUB.

  6. Some Thoughts and Perspectives: International Focus • Conference still dominated by domestic interests and “cool factor”; • Health outcomes are really missing from the conversation • Kudos for the “Dose of Reality” Booth organized by James Bon Tempo - it was truly giving a dose of reality to those passing by. • Strong interest expressed for a separate international track next year; • Recommend mHealth Working Group talk to organizers about a role in organizing this track? • mHWG could form a sub-committee to work with mHA now to start developing a dedicated track for mHealth in developing countries for next year.
