  3. What is Addition and Subtraction? Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • They both involved dealing with numbers • Addition can be used to Positively include anything. • Addition is used with a “+” sign, and Subtraction is used with a “-” sign. • Subtraction can be used to Take Away anything. • We use these terms to have a better understand on how numbers change. • OVERALL, Addition and Subtraction makes numbers interesting and makes it fun to figure out big and small numbers

  4. The Initial Step(Addition) Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • Picture you have the numbers… • 23, 12 & 8, 7 • The first thing you do is place the numbers Vertically to make it easier. • Correct Order…. • 23 8 + 12 + 7

  5. What is Addition? Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • Addition is the process of combining quantities. • To find the “Answer” (Sum), you combine the quantities together. • Start combing the last digits first. (i.e. 3+2), then the first digits (2+1).. • When put together you come up with *35* • Finding the Sum • 23 +12

  6. Addition Contin.. Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • Key Tips: When adding Zero “0”to any number, the number stays the same. • Term: Carrying?! • Sometimes your adding gives you am answer that is greater than ten (10). Example, 6+6= 12. When you start to add larger numbers you will need to start “Carrying” Values. • Examples: 16+16= 32! • How did we get that answer? Shouldn't the answer be 20-something? There are two ones in the tens columns and those add up to "2." You are able to get the "3" in the tens column because you carried a value from the ones column when you were adding your first set of numbers.

  7. Carrying Steps Go back to the table to content NEXT 2/23/2010 • Here are the steps...1. Add the values in the ones column. In our example you add 6 + 6. The answer is "12".2. Write down the "2." That will be the ones value in your sum.3. Take that extra "1" and add it to the values in the tens column. Moving that "1" is called "carrying." Our example has you adding 1 + 1 + 1 for the tens column.4. You would get the tens sum of "3" and that becomes the tens value for your answer.5. The two values (3 and 2) make up your sum. You get each of those values by adding numbers in each column.

  8. What is Subtraction? Your Doing Great!! • 56 • - 22 Go back to the table to contents Answer is….. “34” YAY!!!!!! NEXT 2/23/2010 • Subtraction is the inverse of addition! • To find the “Answer” (Difference), you take away starting from the last digits (i.e. 6-2), and from the first digits (i.e. 5-2) • Try and find the inverse of these numbers

  9. Subtraction Contin… Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • Key Tips: When subtracting Zero “0” to any number, the number stays the same.

  10. Practice Problems!! What is the Sum of this Addition problem? 61 +25 A). 77B). 86 C). 46 Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010

  11. Problem #2 45 - 33 A). 11B). 78C). 12 Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • What is the Differenceof this SubtractionProblem?

  12. Problem #3 A). 25B). 28C). 31 Go back to the table to contents NEXT 2/23/2010 • The Baseball team has a total of 20 players. If they cut 3 players, and add another 8 players from their farm system to their team, How many players does the baseball team have now?
