  1. Warm-up #6 • Brainstorm as many problems in the Catholic Church as you can.

  2. Problems with the Church • Sale of indulgences • Sale of offices (clergy/priests) • Misuse of money (Pope Leo X) • Failure to bless the dying (plague) • Inquisition • Hypocrisy in the Church (do as I say not as I do). • Practicing sacraments or traditions not mentioned in the Bible (all services in Latin, etc...)

  3. A Corrupt System The staff of South Pointe Middle School has been slowing gaining more power in the community. They have a huge influence on your daily lives. Pleasing them is important because they will determine if you get the grades necessary to get into the perfect college of your dreams. However, they have been doing some things recently that you do not agree with.

  4. Oh no you didn’t! • Mrs. Arzola has used Community Club money to buy herself a new Jaguar and has been throwing lavish dinner parties for the teachers. • To raise more money, she has been taking bribes from potential teachers applying to work at South Pointe. • The teachers and staff have been allowing students to shorten their time in detention.

  5. Oh no you didn’t, again! • Students accused of cheating have been expelled and forced to run the mile and do 300 push-ups every period. • Teachers have been refusing to allow students to leave on time. • Teachers have been giving detention for dress code violations but have been coming to school in sweat pants and flip flops everyday! • Teachers have been teaching things that aren’t required in the state standards.

  6. What do you do? • Task: In groups of four: • discuss the problems at South Pointe M.S. Write a list student demands to address each of these problems. • Choose one demand to write on the chart paper provided by your teacher. • Decide how you would present your list of demands.

  7. Discussion– write answers on the bottom of page Reformation 13 • How were” problems” in the South Pointe story similar to problems in the Catholic Church before the Reformation? • How were your demands similar to the demands made in Martin Luther’s 95 Thesis? • How do you think the school staff would respond to your demands? • How did the Church respond to Martin Luther’s 95 Thesis? • Do you agree with Martin Luther’s approach? Why or why not?
