  1. TEFL 510 The Silent Way

  2. The Silent Way • The Silent Way is one of a group of so-called “designer methods” developed in the period after the rejection of behaviorist-based Audio Lingual Method. • As such, it is kin to the cognitive code methods. • The idea that teaching should be subordinated to learning comes from the cognitive code, and is central to the Silent Way. • The Silent Way was developed by Caleb Gattegno, and was franchised by him.

  3. Silent Way Principles The Silent Way is based upon three main principles: • that learning is facilitated if the learner discovers rather than remembers or repeats • thatlearning is aided by physical objects • that problem-solving is central to learning

  4. Learning as Discovery The idea that learning is facilitated if the learner discovers rather than remembers or repeats is a reaction to the Audio Lingual method. What makes this idea cognitive rather than behavioristic? What were the premises of audio lingual teaching?

  5. Learning is Aided by Physical Objects Cuisenaire rods, originally designed for the teaching of mathematics, are the primary physical artifact used in the Silent Way and are used to illustrate meaning. What other method calls for the use of physical objects?

  6. Learning as Problem Solving Gattegno believed that learning best takes place in the act of problem solving, preferably with as little aid as possible from the teacher. Though the Silent Way isn’t widely used today, the idea of language learning as problem solving is it’s most important legacy to modern language teaching.

  7. What do you think? Now that we’ve seen a demonstration of the Silent Way, what do you see as its strengths and weaknesses?

  8.
