  2. Reading is a skill. Like all skills, it requires not only instruction but practice. The purpose of Accelerated Reader is to enable powerful reading practice.

  3. Primary Goals of AR 1. Accelerate growth in reading ability • Enable students to practice at a • personalized level and pace • Foster a love of reading in all • students 4. Improve comprehension

  4. Quantity vs. Quality Points measure only the quantity of reading practice. Comprehension scores measure the quality of reading practice.

  5. Just reading is not enough! Research on AR clearly shows that: Comprehension scores are themost important factor in reading growth in Accelerated Reader. Achieving an average comprehension score of: 85% is absolutely critical for reading growth. Don’t emphasize Points over Comprehension

  6. PERSONALIZED • AR is personalized for each student • Measures students reading capabilities • Matches students with appropriate books by readability level and interest levels. • Creates individual goals

STAR and ZPD Standardized Test Assessing Reading Computerized reading assessment test Gives baseline data on student’s reading ability Suggest a range of book levels for each student (ZPD) Zone of Proximal Development Represents the book level of difficulty that is neither to hard nor too easy Book Level- difficulty of text based on sentence length, word length, and grade level of words.

  8. WILL CHANGE OVER TIME Need to be aware of Interest level also- based on content of book.

  9. POINTS Point values are based on word count and readability level Point Goal Used to keep track of how much reading a student has done. Earn points depending on Reading Practice Quiz results
