NX5 ROUTER IMPLEMENTATION. My name is Jernelle Jones. I joined Electro-Motive in July 2007. I have worked with router for about 3 years with several electrical hardware harness groups. In this past year, I have started the implementation of NX5 Router at EMD. Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD).

What do we do in the wire group
WHAT DO WE DO IN THE WIRE GROUP?

  • EMD develops the wire schematics, wire running list (WRL) and cable form harnesses.

  • EMD develops voltage cabinets that house the electrical equipment and the associated circuitry.


Manufacturing past wire design techniques
Manufacturing Past Wire Design Techniques

  • Cabinet mock-up used to develop the routes that determine wire lengths. This is used to create a process drawing.

  • Building process drawing form boards. Taping, tooling, and any annotations needed.

  • Then cut sheets for process drawings are manually created.


Engineering past wire design techniques

  • The schematics are developed by engineering. The WRL list is given to the designer to update the engineering cable form drawings.

  • The engineering cable form drawings are created in a 2D drafting environment.

  • BCT 3D-Raster bridges the gap between environments of hand drawings, legacy CAD systems and NX5.

  • BCT 3D-Raster gives you the power to choose to remodel, or to edit the raster image and continue to use it in 2D form.



Present wire design
PRESENT WIRE DESIGN

  • By implementing the program, EMD has changed the way cable form harnesses are designed.

  • We use the 3D model to form the routing of wires in conjunction with the schematic information.

  • The route is then put onto a form board drawing with the developed lengths of wires from a cut sheet.

  • This information is delivered to Manufacturing for build, yet controlled by Engineering.

Where we want to go

  • Automated Schematic Software (E3 Software).

  • Develop routes for all wires in the locomotive. We are at 40% completion.

  • Use automated wire cutting machines that cut, strips, terminates, & tags all wires.
