  1. Mathematics and War By: Jeremy Wright

  2. A History • Mathematics and War have been linked through history. • Archimedes was employed to create weapons to defend Syracuse. • People have been employing math to make guns shoot straighter and farther. • Math is used to create a fair draft system

  3. Math Today • Today, people are using math to find order in war. • Sean Gourley and a team has found a formula relating numbers of attacks to number of people killed so they can find the probability of an event that will kill x number of people. • Neil Johnson and his team have found a formula that predicts the number of days between attacks on troops in Afghanistan.

  4. Johnson’s Formula • An Example of Neil Johnson’s formula Tn = T1n-b. • Tnis the number of days between the nth attack and its successor. • T1 represents the days between the first and second attacks • n is the attack number

  5. Conclusion • Math is used in a variety of contexts when it comes to war. • With the new studies being done to understand attacks and casualties we can hopefully start to guard ourselves against attacks and lower the causalities.
