  1. The NEIGHBORHOODS NETWORK WHY ME? 1

  2. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? SUMMARY: To find out what my neighbors consider important. To hear the reports of the Work Groups. To help select candidates to run for office. To gain a sense of self-respect from participating in genuine ‘self-governance.’ To do ‘detective work’ (participating in one of the work groups). To make certain this organization remains decentralized and strictly ‘grassroots.’ No vehicle for any ideology. 2

  3. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? TO FIND OUT WHAT MY NEIGHBORS THINK Because nothing happens until we get consensus. To get consensus on an issue and its solution, we have to know what our neighbors think and feel. Solutions are like gloves – they have to be comfortable. The vast majority of us must be comfortable with each and every solution. To gain common ground, we have to know and respect each others opinions very well. 3

  4. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? TO LISTEN TO WORK GROUP REPORTS Individually, we have very limited amounts of time to investigate issues, find solutions, then implement them. By using work groups, we each contribute a little, and get big results. The reports of the work groups we set in motion are the crown jewels of the TNN. By listening to reports, asking pointed questions, and voting to direct further effort – we control the work to the satisfaction of the neighborhood. Well regulated work groups are key to governance. 4

  5. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? TO SELECT CANDIDATES TO RUN FOR OFFICE No point to electing an official unless you tell that official what to do. That’s why we give him or her a mandate. The way to have a “public servant” is to select the candi-date to run for office. (It’s what the corporate wealthy currently do.) Then we get the candidate elected (neighborhood based communications). When he/she gets in – we closely monitor. It’s like employing someone – you better know what you want him or her to do - and you better follow-up. 5

  6. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? GAIN SELF-RESPECT THROUGH ‘SELF-GOVERNANCE’ Participate as an equal in governance, not as a subject. End dependency on mass-media for information. Use TNN as an effective means to communicate on matters of importance. Make my judgment and opinion count. Transform from being an isolated individual to being a powerful member of community. 6

  7. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? DO DETECTIVE WORK In a work group, I’ll obtain information from many sources. I’d like to read dossiers and interview experts. I’d like to analyze information from different sources. I’d like to compare the results of different work groups investigating the same topic. I’d like to organize data and present it to my friends. I’m imaginative. I find solutions to tough problems. 7

  8. TNN WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE? KEEP THIS ORGANIZATION HONEST This organization belongs to me and my neighbors. It doesn’t belong to its initial founders. I’ll make darn certain that it remains decentralized – genuinely “grass roots.” This is our best chance to bring self-governance to the nation. We need to make it work. Sometimes it will be tough collaborating with neighborhoods with different philosophical inclinations – but that’s what it takes to find consensus. 8
