  3. Definition • An approach to teaching reading and listening comprehension whereby students take turns asking teacher like questions of their classmates.

  4. Theory • Vygotsky’s theory of Cognitive development • Students eventually internalize the processes that they first use in their discussions with others

  5. Successful With • Students with learning disabilities • Word decoding to text comprehension • 1st graders thru College Age Students • Effective reading and listening comprehension skills

  6. Provides • A mechanism through which both the teacher and students can model effective reading and learning strategies • Effective cognitive processes by first having students practice them aloud in group sessions

  7. Allows knowledge to be gained by: • Summarizing • Questioning • Clarifying • Predicting

  8. Example • Six seventh-grade students with a history of poor reading comprehension participated in twenty reciprocal teaching sessions, each lasting about thirty minutes. Despite this relatively short intervention, students showed remarkable improvement in their reading comprehension skills. They became increasingly able to process reading material independently of their classroom teacher.
