  1. The Pronghorn Learning Adventure DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  2. A typical day as a Pronghorn interpretive volunteer May start out looking like this: Hello! My son is a big fan of things that run rapidly and we heard that the Pronghorn is a very fast animal. What can you tell us about it? Next DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  3. But can quickly turn into this: How does it avoid predators? Where does it live? Is it endangered? How does it reproduce? What does it look like? How big? How fast? DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  4. But wait help has arrived! Thank you! Pronghorns are Awesome! Hello, I’m Anton and I’m going to help you discover ways to get your visitors to react like this: Let’s get started! DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  5. How Anton can help Don't worry! There may be a lot of information to learn about the Pronghorn but throughout our time together we'll learn to answer all of our guests' questions – if we pay attention! Now there are a lot of antelope here at the zoo, help me pick out the Pronghorn. Which one is it? DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  6. Which of these is a Pronghorn? (A) (B) (C) DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  7. You identified the right animal! Good job, The ultimate goal of being an interpreter is to be able to accurately answer your guests' questions. So let's go see if we can help those guests. The North American Pronghorn DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  8. Oops! You misidentified the animal! Actually this isn’t the Pronghorn, want to try again, Champ? The African Blackbuck Antelope DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  9. Oops! You misidentified the animal! Actually this isn’t the Pronghorn, want to try again, Champ? The White Tailed Deer DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  10. Let’s go back to answer our first visitors’ question: Hi! My name's Timmy! I heard that the Pronghorn can outrun a Cheetah, is that true? DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  11. So how does the Pronghorn’s speed compare to a Cheetah’s? Compared to the Cheetah, the Pronghorn is (click on your answer): (A) Way Faster! (B) Much Slower! (C) About the same! 60 MPH 0 MPH 40 MPH 20 MPH 80 MPH DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  12. So how does the Pronghorn’s speed compare to a Cheetah’s? "Well, I heard on Animal Planet that that's not true. They're actually about the same speed. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  13. So how does the Pronghorn’s speed compare to a Cheetah’s? Yeah I heard the same thing on Animal Planet. They're actually about the same speed. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  14. Yeah that is true. They have a similar speed because the Pronghorn and the Cheetah share a few physical traits, like a large heart and lungs to help them pump blood and take in air quicker. Both even have evolved to have lightweight bonesso their own body weight won't slow them down. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  15. Wow! I'm going to tell that to my friends at school! DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  16. Guests like feeling like experts on the things they’re interested in. That’s why it’s important to listen to what they want to know and provide clear and accurate information that they can share with others. Who knows, the people they talk to might come to the zoo and check out the Pronghorn. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  17. Hey so what do you mean ‘lightweight bones’? How much does a Pronghorn weigh? Click on your response: (B) Pronghorns weigh between 90 and 140 pounds (A) Pronghorns weigh between 60 to 80 pounds Or DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  18. 140?! That’s not so light! DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  19. The exhibition plaque says it weighs between 90 and 140 pounds. You should double check your information. 140 pounds isn’t even that light... DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  20. Well, 140 is the heaviest Pronghorn you probably will ever see. How about we compare some animals that we’re familiar with to a Pronghorn?” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  21. Here’s some familiar animals and howmuch they weigh: Adult Man Pronghorn Newfoundland Dog Quarter Horse 90 – 150 lbs. 100 – 150 lbs. Domestic Cat 160 – 196 lbs. 7 – 9 lbs. 1100 – 1300 lbs. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  22. Hey dad look at these pronghorns one has black markings, but the other doesn’t. Why do these pronghorns not have the same markings and horns? Click on your response: (A) The males have black markings on their nose and face, as well as, horns while the females don’t. (B) The Females have black markings on their nose and face while the males don’t. Or DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  23. “Oh, that’s why this one has horns!” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  24. “I don’t think male Pronghorns nurse fawns.” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  25. Here’s a few photographs of Pronghorns. Look for the dark marks along the nose and under the jaw on males. Notice that Females don’t have these marks at all. The male Pronghorns’ horns are made up of a bone which is covered by a sheath which grows and sheds annually. The females don’t have sheaths over theirs. 26. So the Pronghorn has all these cool features. What… does it have super vision too? Click on your response: (A) Yes. Yes they do. (B) Oh no, they have normal vision like you and me. Or DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  27. No way! How strong are a Pronghorn’s eyes? DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  28. Wait, humans have good vision, but we aren’t wild animals. Let’s take another look. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  29. Pronghorns need to have great vision to survive in the wild. And boy do Pronghorns have great vision. They’re able to see movement up to 4 miles away! Their eyesight helps them see if predators are approaching so they can move their herd to a safe location. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  30. Well, it’s still early and we’ve got a lot of Zoo to cover, let’s head towards Elephant Odyssey. I want to be a Pronghorn! I could spot and outrun anything! DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  31. You’ll run into all kinds of guests here but also be aware of Zoo officials. They want to make sure you’re providing fun and accurate information. I’m going to check up on another volunteer really quick. Be right back. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  32. Hey, so you’re the new interpreter for the Pronghorns? I know you’re still in training but by now you’ve got to know some of the Pronghorns’ basic physical traits. Show me what you’ve learned... DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  33. “Tell me which of these Pronghorns are females?” (A) Or (B) DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  35. The Pronghorn is the second fastest land animal in the world, bested only by the Cheetah. What do they have in common? Drag and drop the appropriate word bubbles on both the cheetah and pronghorn that make them so fast. 20 Horse Power Large heart Long tail Bionic limbs Bionic limbs Light weight bones Large heart Long tail Large lungs Springy feet Springy feet Large lungs Light weight bones 20 Horse Power DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  36. The pronghorn is very good at detecting predators. What sense or senses would a Pronghorn use to avoid danger? Click on the correct response: (A) 4 miles with almost 360o field of view (B) Ultra distance vision (50 miles) (C) Maximum human distance vision (D) Microscopic vision DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  37. “A Pronghorn can be compared to a great deal of typical animals. How much do you think a Pronghorn weighs? Enter a weight range here: DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  40. Lisa says this “I like how you presented information about how Pronghorns choose territories. But are they this complicated when choosing partners?” Click your response: (A) The way Females choose mates is actually pretty complex. (B)The way Males choose mates is actually pretty complex. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  41. 2 Avatar says this 1 Sam says this “As complex as this lady?! I don’t believe it!” “Well I wouldn’t know about that, but let’s watch them and see what we’re talking about.” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  42. 2. Avatar says this 1 Sam says this This info board says that female pronghorns use three different ways to choose their mates. Let’s watch them and see how complicated their selection process is.” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  43. Click on the image of the selection style you would like to learn more about. Then when you feel like you’re ready click the next button. Sampling Quiet Inciting DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  44. Sampling Herd 2 In Sampling, the female visits different Patriarchal herds to scope out which male she should mate with.  This usually happens 2-3 months before the mating month, September. Think of sampling like trying on clothes before you decide to buy them. Herd 1 Herd 3 Single tan female DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  45. Inciting Herd 2 Step 1 Inciting comes in two steps. The female runs from the men to get them interested. Then the males fight one another for her. The winner of the fight wins  the female.  Think of inciting like playing hard to get. Step 2 DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  46. Quiet Herd 2 In Quiet selection, the female takes the desired male away from the herd. This way she can insure that they will mate without competition. Think of Quiet like putting something you want on layaway. DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  47. Sam says this “So which method is that pronghorn using? Click on your response: (A) Inciting (B) Sampling (C) Quiet DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  48. Lisa says this “Oh! It’s kind of like speed-dating!” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  49. Sam says this “But there was no fighting and the male she chose wasn’t isolated from the herd...That must sampling.” DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE

  50. “Wait, so which are the other two ways a female can select a male?” Lisa says this Quiet Sampling Inciting Pass Fail DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY REPRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS INTRODUCTION CONSERVATION PRACTICE
