  2. Search Bar • This bar is used for constructing your search • Enter key words – the fewer the better do not use “and” or any other connecting words Statin stroke

  3. Using the Limits Tab

  4. Limit Publication Types

  5. Select More Limits • Pick language • Choose humans • Limit publication date • Subset – if needed This option will eliminate letters, case histories, etc.

  6. Short Review • Use as few search terms as possible • Set your limits • Language • Humans • Publication dates – you can enter just years • Subsets – types of journals • Ages – only if for neonates and children • Check on “abstracts only” if you are looking for articles and more general topics. • Publication types – if you want to limit to review articles or other specific types of articles. • YOU CAN ALWAYS CHANGE YOUR LIMITS AT ANY TIME

  7. This second bar deals with how your search appears on the web page. All items with a green or orange bar in this icon are free full text – click on the icon

  8. Make Changes and Selections Change the Show number Always click on the DISPLAY button to select your view Check all those articles that you wish to examine more fully then click display

  9. “Send to” Command The best tool on the bar

Review • Select the number of articles you want to see on one web page next to the word “show” • Check the boxes next to the citations which meet your needs • Use the DISPLAY button to only display items you have checked. • When you have completed this, only those citations you have chosen will show on one page. • Us the “Send To” box to add your search to the clipboard, save it as a file, or email it to another.

  13. Use the clipboard smartly • This is a filtering technique • Add articles to the clipboard as you go • Then go to clipboard and select those that you want to keep • Articles can be deleted later • Using the “related articles” feature allows seamless searches with the clipboard.

  15. Use the History Tab • Search History will be lost after eight hours of inactivity. • To combine searches use # before search number, e.g., #2 AND #6. • Search numbers may not be continuous; all searches are represented. • Click on query # to add to strategy

  16. Preview Index Tab • This option allows you to have more choices in selecting your search terms. • You can search a term in a vast array of headings and select the right one for your search.

  17. AND, OR, NOT???? • Boolean logic refers to the logical relationship among search terms, and is named for the British-born Irish mathematicianGeorge Boole. • AND is a limiting term – makes the search results smaller • OR is a combining term – makes search results larger • Not is a nullifying term – eliminates items entirely from search

  21. Related Articles • One of the MOST useful tools in PubMed • Use related articles feature to narrow and refine your search • Use the clipboard and add new articles as you progress through related articles.

  22. Links • Links provide hyperlinks to full text books online through the National Library of Medicine. • This service also links to other databases and full text material in the National Center for Biotechnical Information

  23. Abstracts and Full Text The library has linked its electronic and print collection to PubMed. Whenever possible you will have a direct link to the full text of the article. You will need passwords if you are accessing remotely. Click on this icon

  25. Online Full Text Journals • Online full text journals come from the following vendors: • Proquest • OVID • MDConsult • Individual Subscriptions • Have your various passwords available
