  2. Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are a common phenomena. • About 100 strike Earth’s surface every single second • Lightning storms cause more deaths than most natural storms. • Each bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity.

  3. Men are struck by lightning four times more often than women. • You are most likely to be stuck by a lightning bolt in Florida. • 10,000 forest fires are caused by lightning each year in the U.S.

  4. Each of these bolts is about 150 feet long. • Lightning is extremely hot—a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. • The sound of thunder travels about 1 mile every five seconds.

  5. You should always stay away from water during a lightning storm. • Some types of lightning, including the most common types, never leave the clouds but travel between differently charged areas within or between clouds.

  6. If you are caught outside during a lightning storm you should curl up in a ball. • Lightning bolts are even hotter than the SUN!!!!! • Hundreds survive strikes but suffer from a variety of lasting symptoms, including memory loss, dizziness, weakness, numbness, and other life-altering ailments.

  7. The safest place during a lightning storm is inside • Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are a common phenomena. • People who get struck by lightning die of cardiac arrest.
