  3. Safety Committee History Many Committees of Safety were established throughoutColonial America at the start of the American Revolution. These committees started to appear in the 1760s as means to discuss the concerns of the time, and often consisted of every male adult in the community. • John Hancock - Committee Chairman (Massachusetts 1774)

  11. Finding your Champions Creating Safety Champions isn't always easy. Sometimes they come from the most unlikely candidates. Perhaps they were the ones who resisted the safety process in the beginning, or they adopted a “wait and see” attitude. Whatever their reasons, they have now becomes Champions of the process. But how did they get that way? • EducationFirst, you have to get their attention. Education helps them to understand that unsafe acts cause injuries and what their role is in preventingaccidents; • Involvement Second, they must be actively involved in creating a proactive process to help prevent injuries. • Support Finally, when employees manage the process and coordinate management support, everyone wins through a safer workplace

Finding your Champions These are the attitudes that your creation will exhibit on a daily basis. • Focus on safety, as well as productivity. • Communicate concern for others in individual conversations. • Provide positive feedback to associates for working safely. • Continually educate themselves about safety procedures and the risks in any aspect of their work. • Anticipate unforeseen dangers. • Document and address unsafe conditions and near misses. • Recognize others for safety improvement efforts. • Promote problem-solving during safety observations and meetings. • Ask for suggestions on how to improve their own safety performance. • Continuously make suggestions for improving safety. • Practice what they preach.

  13. Effective Meeting There are 11 million business meeting each and every day in the US. • Set Objectives for the Meeting • Provide an Agenda Beforehand • Assign Meeting Preparation • Assign Action Items • Examine Your Meeting Process DON’T WASTE PEOPLE’S TIME

BE A SAFETY CHAMPION & LEADER • Communication does not always occur naturally, it must be taught and practiced • When you are passionate, you always have your destination in sight • Confrontation simply means meeting the truth head on • It takes courage to make a decision • Goals should be realistic, attainable and shared among all members.
