  1. Advanced Spoken English Lexicogrammatical session 3: Analysing a TV programme

  2. Discuss the questions below with your partner • How much TV do you normally watch in English? How many hours a week? • How does this compare with what you watched in your L1? • Do you think listening to TV is easier than other kinds of listening in English? • What’s your favourite programme on NZ TV?

  3. Genres of TV shows • How many different kinds of genres can you think of? Eg. sports, news… • Go to http://tvnz.co.nz/tv2 and click on ‘This week’s TV2 schedule’ – have you seen any of these shows? What genre are they?

  4. TV shows - genres • Go to http://tvnz.co.nz/video • Click on ‘browse by genre’ • With your partner, identify one show for each genre that you know or have seen. • Drama, comedy, reality • Factual, news, sport • Food, children, youth

  5. Impromptu speech Your teacher will give you a topic to share in your group of three. Tell your group your opinion or experience according to the topic you get.

  7. Questions • See your worksheet for examples of the kinds of questions that will help you analyse a TV excerpt.

  8. Now it’s your turn to do some analysis • Choose a TV show with your partner. • Decide on the episode or extract you will analyse. • Use questions on Moodle Forum 3 to help you. • Allocate questions to each other. • Upload your analysis to Moodle Forum 3.

  9. Commenting on the forum • Upload your analysis to the Moodle Forum. • Comment on two other people’s analyses. Your comments might relate to • content from the show that you have watched • what you know about the TV show and have noticed yourself from watching it • whether their analysis/explanation is clear • what aspects of spoken English they have identified that is new for you • whether you would like to watch this programme
