  1. Student FoundationGoals Organizational development, Leadership development, and Advancement

  2. This chart shows the three parts of the IU Student Foundation: the organization, the leadership development, and advancement. I believe that each level influences the others, and in order for the advancement piece to happen, we must focus on building the organization from the bottom.

  3. Organization Development

  4. IU Alumni Association • Working together to create programs and events • I have already developed a great working relationship with Emili Sperling • IU Money Smarts • Connect with this new program to see how we can promote the relationship between proper financial planning and giving after and during college Building Partnerships

  5. Increasing the diversity of IUSF will: • Create opportunities for personal and professional development for students within the organization • Help the organization build a stronger connection with the diverse IU student population Diversity

  6. Create or enhance other opportunities for involvement within IUSF beyond Little 500 • A broader scope of programs will attract a more diverse group of students who have a wide variety of interests • Diversifying the organization in terms of both membership and involvement opportunities will increase the number of students interested in joining Diversity

  7. Specifically focus recruitment efforts towards students who will help diversify the group • Example: Extend a personal invitation to Hudson-Holland scholars or Fry scholars to become involved • Web content, posters, fliers, and displays should highlight all IUSF programs and events so more students will be interested in getting involved • Highlight Leadership Development as a recruitment tool Recruitment

  8. Orientation to IUSF • The faster they get to know what the organization does, the sooner they will become effective, contributing members. Help them to get to know the organization and what is expected of them as members. • Get students involved right away; give them responsibility. Retention

  9. Leadership Opportunities • Look for ways to create moreleadership roles within the organization so more students can be actively involved • Build a team atmosphere • Social events, icebreakers, and team builders are a great way to make the organization stronger as a whole Retention

  10. Rewards • Positive reinforcement is very important to keep a group motivated • Reinforce individuals as well as the organization • Recognize the group as a whole in the IDS or other publications and displays • Group relations • One of the main reasons students join organizations is to meet other people • Students will stay involved in an organization where they have meaningful, personal connectionswith others • Make sure all students feel valued and needed Retention

  11. Leadership Development

  12. If college students are to accrue the full range of gains and outcomes associated with engagement, an actual out-of-class curriculum—complete with learning outcomes, activities, and experiences to actualize those goals, and assessment plans—should be intentionally developed, and there must be some personal and institutional accountability for its implementation. -Creating Inclusive Campus Environments for Cross-Cultural Learning and Student Engagement Leadership Development

  13. Goal: Create a comprehensive leadership development program for all students involved in IUSF • Work with student leadership and Associate Directors to determine goals and outcomes for involvement in the organization • May be derived from campus goals, LEAP Essential Learning Outcomes, etc. • I developed the Student Engagement Learning Outcomes for the Kelley School of Business • Use the determined goals to asesscurrent internal organizational programs Leadership Development

  14. Involve students in existing Leadership Development courses and workshops available on campus • LEAD IU (Office of Student Life and Learning) • IGNITE  • Student Leader Program  • Advanced Leader Program • Take a group of students to a national conference, such as CASE • Encourage students to consider presenting as well Leadership Development

  15. We know that IUSF students are learning valuable skills and developing personally as a result from their involvement • In order for students to learn the most from their involvement, they must take the time to make meaning from their experiences • Reflection following events • Individual reflection on personal growth at the end of the year • Bruce Jacobs, Director of the Union, asks the students on Union Board to write a paragraph about what they learned during the year Leadership Development

  16. Advancement

  17. In order for our students to tell others about the importance of giving, they must first understand it and believe in it • Educate all IUSF members on the mission, goals, and plans for the upcoming year • Bring in guest speakers from the IU Foundation or Government Relations Office to educate them on the facts and figures, and reasons why it is important to give • Consider workshops or courses in philanthropy for student leaders (Fund Raising and Resource Development, School of Public Health) Advancement

  18. Diversifying the organization in terms of both membership and involvement opportunities, creating a comprehensive leadership development program, and educating the members about giving to IU will increase the organization’s likelihood of soliciting gifts from the student body and young alumni. Advancement
