2. The Beginning • Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait August 1990. • United Nations organized 34 nations • Purpose: to expel Iraq from Kuwait

3. Getting Involved • President: George H. W. Bush • Sent American troops Saudi Arabia • Urged other countries to send forces • U.S sent most military forces

4. The Battle Starts • Aerial attack on 17 January 1991 • Commanded: USAF Lieutenant General Chuck Horner • Dropped 88,500 tons of bombs • Ground assault on 23 February.

5. Solutions • launched a massive air campaign • began codenamed Operation Desert Storm • First priority- Iraqi air force, anti-aircraft facilities. • Launched mostly from Saudi Arabia • Six aircraft carrier battle groups • Persian Gulf and Red Sea
