  1. Chinese Lantern Making

  2. First, close the envelope. Lightly fold the envelope in half vertically. Then mark the half points at both ends. Do not create a vertical line in the middle. Just mark the two end points. Once you mark the middle points at the two shorter sides, fold the four corners to the middle points like the picture above. Once you are done, make another one just like it.

  3. When you finish folding both envelopes, put them together like the pictures above. Make sure the end point is touching the middle point of the other envelope. One way to check is to make sure that the two triangles on either side of the end point are the same size. Use clear tapes to tape them together on all four sides.

  4. When you are done with one pair, make three more pairs and put them together like the picture above. When you put them together, pay attention to the design of your envelopes. Make sure they are put together consistently so the overall design will look nice. Tape them together by using clear tapes.

  5. Once you determine which way is up and which way is down, you need to punch 2 holes (one per envelope) on both ends to put the strings on. The top string is for hanging. The bottom string is to attach the bottom piece.

  6. When you tie the knot for the string, make sure you tie the knot like the way shown in the picture above – tie the knot inside so it is hidden.

  7. There are different things that you can tie to the bottom. If you want to add the firecrackers, each firecracker uses one envelope. You should find a cylinder object which you can use to roll the envelope. This way, all the firecrackers will have the same size. You then punch a hole on each firecracker to string them all together.

  8. Materials & where to buy them Red yarn/clear tape/hole puncher – craft store/Target Small red envelopes for top – Ranch market or TakShing Hong Decoration piece at bottom – TakShing Hong or DIY TakkShing Hong 德成行 is located at 1457 Nogales St. Rowland Heights
