  2. Town of Currie

  3. MALACHI 1: 2-9 BLASPHEME

  4. God tells Israel • MALACHI 1: 2 “I HAVE LOVED YOU, • I LOVE YOU, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU,” (IMPLIED BY/IN HEBREW) FIRST OF 7 STATEMENTS BY GOD IN MALACHI

  5. HAS GOD CHANGED? • Look at God, instead of beginning with anger and wrath at their external form of religion… like a weeping parent to a prodigal child, He begins by telling them of His great love for them. Wow. • “But God commended His love for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”

  6. HEART OF STONE RESPONSE #1 • HOW HAVE YOU LOVED US GOD? (sarcasm) • VS 2 – 5 i.e. where is our blessings? • Rather than wiping them out for insolence… • HE actually answers them…. • HE SAYS: CONSIDER • ESAU (EDOM/PETRA) • (JACOB’S/ISRAEL’S TWIN) • READ 2 - 5

  7. Entrance to Petra

  9. TODAY

  10. CONTRAST – TEL AVIV

  11. GOD’S PLEA: ARE YOU BLIND?ISRAEL’S RESPONSE: • SHOULD HAVE BEEN: forgive me… I have sinned • INSTEAD: HARDNESS OF HEART; “GOD I HAVE BEEN DOING YOUR RITUALS, WHERE IS MY BLESSING?” • SO GOD SAYS: I HAVE MORE AGAINST YOU

  12. May I Interject… • During great TRIBULATION, after first 3 ½ years, the Anti-Christ will break his “peace "commitment to Israel… and Revelation 12: 6 states “Then the woman (Israel) fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days” (3 and ½ years) ISAIAH 26: 20-21 … same thought (one stick of dynamite could close the entrance)

  13. HOW ABOUT WHAT JESUS SAID • MATT. 24: 15-16 • “THEREFORE WHEN YOU SEE THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION, SPOKEN OF BY DANIEL THE PROPHET, STANDING IN THE HOLY PLACE (WHOEVER READS, LET HIM UNDERSTAND), THEN LET THOSE WHO ARE IN JUDEA FLEE TO THE MOUNTAINS….” • EAST JORDAN IS DESERT… FLAT • SOUTH … NEGEV DESERT … FLAT …

  14. MOSES ROCK/SPRING

  15. application • GOD still addresses men and women with the same touching appeal… Are yours (and my) heart so hard/cold… that we cannot see that GOD intensely loves you and me …. Personally? …. As were the Israelis of Malachi’s day, so are we?????, • I confess my heart is not what it should be toward God… can you join me in repentance? • SIN WILL KEEP MY/YOUR HEART HARD…. (And improperly accuse God in our hearts of being indifferent to our welfare.)

  16. Application (con’t) • God will be glorified in the punishment of sin as well as in the reward of obedience (grace). Hell will be full of God’s glory, as well as heaven.

  17. God’s Threatening .. A Burden • Every man and woman must choose between an exceeding great and eternal weight of glory, and an exceeding great and eternal weight of wrath (vs. 1) • God is love… this is true even when He afflicts, for whom He loveth He chasteneth. (The gardener prunes the vines… so it may bring forth much fruit…) • (Have we ever said in our murmuring … where are the blessing?… does He really love me?)

  18. God then makes another accusation • Vs 6 thru 2: 9 (About the priests… the spiritual leaders) • But I am only going to cover vs. 6 to vs. 9 (come next two weeks to hear the rest of the paragraph taught; first Sam C. then Pete M.)

  19. devastating • Israel went into captivity for idolatry and superstition. AFTERWARD, they were prone to the other extreme … practical atheism. • (WDC VIEW) Perhaps the main objective that GOD had in delivering the message of Malachi was to cut off at the start the COLD FRIGID FORMALISM.. DEVELOPED OVER THE NEXT 400 YEARS BY THE PRIESTS/PHARISEES, and the SCOFFING SCEPTICISM OF THE SADDUCEES… WITH THEIR COLD HARD HEARTS • DID IT WORK?

  20. MALACHI ADDRESSED A PEOPLE LOOKING FOR “WORLDLY BLESSINGS” • They expected to be rewarded by God for mere external performance of acts of worship. • (They were insensitive to the spiritual, had no real sense of sin) • Yet, perfectly sure that they were the only persons on earth who had any right to expect any peculiar blessing from God, or to be called HIS PEOPLE.

  21. GOD’S CHARGE to the PRIESTS • 1. Offering defective sacrifices (vs. 7) • 2. Undervaluing the hallowed places (vs.8) • 3. Failing to vindicate the purity of God’s house as they ought to have done (vs. 9,10) • THEY TREATED GOD AS THEY WOULD NOT DARE TREAT AN EARTHLY RULER….

  22. WHEN I FIRST BEGAN TO STUDY MALACHI, I FELT LIKE QUITTING… • GOD’S DEMANDS FOR HIS LEADERS ARE SO HIGH… THAT I CAN NEVER MEASURE UP. • But then the scripture says over and over… its what’s on the inside… • Howard gave me a word of encouragement by saying, “study with everything you have, prepare your lessons as best you can….AND LEAVE THE REST UP TO GOD”. • So here I am….

  23. Verse 6 • “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is my reverence? … Says the Lord of Hosts to you priests who despise My name. • Priests: Yet in what way have we despised your name? • Note: God observes our heart by our actions (James 2)

  24. Verse 7 • YOU OFFER DEFILED FOOD ON MY ALTAR, but say IN WHAT WAY HAVE WE DEFILED YOU? • BY SAYING… • “THE TABLE OF THE LORD IS CONTEMPTIBLE” • Tragically, the priests held all things spiritual as contemptible • They felt that just by going through the motions of the sacrifices would bring them blessing from God

  25. Verse 8 • AND WHEN YOU OFFER THE BLIND AS A SACRIFICE, IS IT NOT EVIL? • AND WHEN YOU OFFER THE LAME AND THE SICK, IS IT NOT EVIL? • OFFER IT THEN TO YOUR GOVERNOR! • WOULD HE BE PLEASED WITH YOU? • WOULD HE ACCEPT YOU FAVORABLY?

  26. VERSE 9 • BUT NOW (YOU TRY TO) ENTREAT GOD’S FAVOR, THAT HE MAY BE GRACIOUS TO YOU… • WHILE YOU ARE DOING SUCH CONTEMPTABLE THINGS….. • WILL HE ACCEPT YOU FAVORABLY? • ANSWER: ?????? (COME NEXT WEEK)

  27. Practical inferences • Christians often acknowledge God as a father and master in words, BUT deny it in deeds. (6) • One who undervalues the ordinances of God’s house, insults God (Baptism and Communion) - 7 • Christians often treat God as they would not dare treat the Gov’t (8) • Prayer without corresponding practice is a mockery (9)
