  • 1st leader – Chandragupta Maurya

    • Unifies and expands into North India

    • Put together an army of:

      • 600,000 soldiers (on foot)

      • 30,000 soldiers on horse back

      • 9,000 elephants

        • To clothe, feed, and pay these troops he levied high taxes

  • Asoka – Brought the Mauryan Empire to its greatest heights –

    • Had a change of heart after the battle of Kalinga where 100,000 troops and civilians were killed – changed to Buddhism and began to spread Buddhism in the empire, (p190)
