  3. John William Waterhouse nasceu em Roma, filho de ingleses, em 1849. Seus pais eram pintores e ele viveu em Roma absorvendo a cultura, a História e o amor à arte italiana até os seis anos de idade, quando sua família retornou à Inglaterra. Waterhouse estudou apenas sob a orientação de seu pai, até entrar na Royal Academy em 1870. Suas primeiras tentativas para conseguir ser admitido foram rejeitadas, mas finalmente entrou para a escola de escultura, sob o patrocínio de Pickersgill, que o encorajou a voltar à pintura.

  9. Waterhouse é, muitas vezes, associado aos Pré-Rafaelitas devido ao seu pendor na pintura por Mitologia e História Clássica, influência recebida pelo seu contato com Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. A exploração de temas como a mulher fatal ( La Belle Dame Sans Merci, Hylas and the Nymphs) e a heroína desamparada (Ophelia, Meriamne, The Lady of Shallot) agradavam imensamente ao público, mas sua habilidade acadêmica e técnica impunha o respeito de seus pares e críticos, tornando-se Associado da Royal Academy em 1885 e Membro Efetivo em 1895.

  12. A verdade é que Waterhouse era considerado de tal forma pelo meio artístico que The Enchanted Garden foi exibido postumamente na Academy, mesmo sem nunca ter sido concluído. John Waterhouse morreu em 1917, depois de uma longa enfermidade. Sua influência pode ser vista no trabalho de Sir Frank Dicksee, Arthur Hacker e Herbert James Draper.
