  2. Agenda for today • Work on a little writing and a little math • Get to know each other a little • Figure out some of our own learning preferences • Write the first draft of a Philosophy of Teaching • Talk about the articles we read for today’s class • Talk about the rest of the semester and course expectations

  3. Consecutive Sums • Write out 2 consecutive numbers • Write out three consecutive numbers (don’t repeat numbers from the first bullet) • What are consecutive numbers? Can you describe them? What’s special about them? • Add the numbers from the first bullet (this is called a consecutive sum) • Add the numbers from the second bullet (this is also called a consecutive sum) • How would you define/describe a consecutive sum?

  4. Consecutive Sums • Write the numbers from 1 to 30 on your paper • Find as many consecutive sums for each number as you can • Do you notice anything cool happening? • Make some conjectures about what you notice (write these down)

  5. Free Write #1 • Open a word document. Save it as: TE801.YOURLASTNAME.Freewrites • I want you to tell me about yourself. • Where are you from ? • Describe your family • What do you like to do? • Sports? • Entertainment? • Social life? • Why teaching? • Why Elementary?

  6. Marcella’s Bagels • I will read you a story and you will try and figure out what the correct answer is • You can do anything you like to figure it out, but you need to be able to explain what you did to the rest of the class

What did you do this week? • What does the classroom look like? • How does the classroom feel? • What does the school look like? • Physical space/building • Neighborhood of the school

  8. Fencing Task • Your neighbor wants you to build a pen to keep rabbits. They have 24 feet of fencing with which to build a rectangular pan to keep the rabbits. • If your neighbors wants the rabbits to have as much room as possible, what dimensions should the pen be? • What if they only had 16 feet of fencing? • How would you determine the pen with the most amount of room for any amount of fencing?

  9. Free write #3 • Of the three math tasks we did today, which was your favorite and why? • Be sure to include any aspect of the task that made it your favorite • Think about how you worked on it • The actual math you did • How you had to present ideas • Your interactions with me as your instructor

  10. Readings for This Week • How do think the readings for this week connected to our first class? • What struck you individually about the readings? • Did you make personal connections? Connections to your placement classroom?
