  1. Integrating 21st Century Skills into the Math Curriculum November 11, 2009ESU#3Facilitated by: Pam Krambeck Debbie Schraeder

  2. Descriptor: Focusing on the content area of math, participants will connect with the K-12 scope and sequence literacy map for mathematics from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills with the newly adopted math standards. Ideas and activities for integrating 21st Century Skills into the math curriculum will be shared. Activities will include an overview of the 21st Century Skills, connecting 21st Century literacy maps to the math standards, and activities that utilize on-line math and collaboration tools. Participants will work through four math activities that address the 21st Century Skills of: * Information and Media Literacy * Communication * Critical Thinking and Systems Thinking * Problem Identification, Formulation & Solution * Creativity and Intellectual Curiosity * Collaboration

  9. Will Teachers Become Obsolete? • No – but bring curriculum and instruction into line with modern world. • Emphasis on collaboration • Emphasis on problem solving • Students need to apply what they have learned in the real world. • “Kids learn better this way than with the old ‘chalk and talk’ approach!”

  10. Why 21st Century Skills? “This is a story about the big public conversation the nation is not having about education… whether an entire generation of kids will fail to make the grade in the global economy because they can’t think their way through abstract problems, work in teams, distinguish good information from bad, or speak a language other than English.” How to Build a Student for the 21st Century, TIME Magazine, December 18, 2006
