  1. The Trinity Doctrine of God

  2. Definition • The word Trinity is never found in the Bible even though the idea is • Trinity means tri-unity or three in oneness • God eternally exists as three persons: Father, son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God.

  3. Old Testament • Genesis 1:26-Let us make man in “our” image, after “our” likeness • Genesis 3:22-Behold man has become like one of “us” knowing good and evil • Genesis 11:7-Come let ”us” go down and confuse their language • Isaiah 6:8-Whom shall I send, and who will go for “us” • Psalm 110:1-The Lord says to my Lord: sit at my right hand…Matthew 22:41-46 • Isaiah 63:10-God’s people rebelled and grieved the Holy Spirit

  4. New Testament • Matthew 3:16-17-16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” • Matthew 28:19-Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  5. New Testament • NT authors generally refer to God the Father as theos and God the Son as kyrios (Lord) • 1 Corinthians 12:4-6-4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. • 1 Peter 1:2-who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:

  6. New Testament • Jude 20-21-20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

  7. Trinity • We must remember the Trinity is a mystery and we will never fully understand it • We do know: God is three persons; each person is fully God, there is one God

  8. Three Persons • The Father is not the son and vice versa • John 1:1-2-In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning • John 17:24-“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. • 1 John 2:1-My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

  9. Three Persons • John 14:26-But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you • Romans 8:27-And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. • John 16:7-But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

  10. Three Persons • Matthew 28:19-Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, • 1 Corinthians 12:4-6-here are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. • 2 Corinthians 13:14-May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

  11. Three Persons • Ephesians 4:4-6-There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all • 1 Peter 1:2-who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:

  12. Three Persons • John 14:26-ut the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you • John 15:26-When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me • Romans 8:16-The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

  13. Fully God • God the Father is clearly fully God. • Jesus is fully God-John 1:1 • In Greek grammar when linking verb “to be” a definite predicate noun will usually drop the definite article when it precedes the verb, but the subject, if definite, will keep the definite article. • Jehovah’s Witness say the Word was a god because no definite article before theos • The definite article is also lacking in places the rest of the chapter such as verses: 6, 12, 13, 18

  14. Fully God • John 20:25-28-25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” • But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” • 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” • 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

  15. Fully God • Hebrews 1:3-he Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. • John 10:30-I and the Father are one.” • Acts 5:3-4-Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

  16. One God • Deuteronomy 6:4-Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. • Isaiah 45:21-22-Was it not I, the Lord?    And there is no God apart from me,a righteous God and a Savior;    there is none but me. • 22 “Turn to me and be saved,    all you ends of the earth;    for I am God, and there is no other.

  17. One God • 1 Timothy 2:5-For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus • 1 Corinthians 8:6-yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. • James 2:19-You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
