  1. SIGMADUR 1800THE NEXT GENERATION DURABLE FINISHES

  2. Added value topcoats • Improved performance qualities • Differentiation in specification position • Higher gloss stability • Better corrosion resistance • Higher dft’s • Economical improvements • Lower VOC

  3. SIGMADUR 1800 Major driving forces in the Protective Coating industry: Highly durable systems • Corrosion engineers and coating specifiers in the offshore and O&G industry ask systems with a durability up to 20 years. • Coating suppliers have launched Polysiloxane topcoats with an expected durability of 15-20 years. Environmental issues. • Polysiloxane systems meet the latter requirement of being high solid hence reducing VOC emissions

  4. USAGE OF HIGHLY DURABLE SYSTEMS: • Highly corrosive environments with high salinity and UV exposure (C5-I and C5-M). • Difficult accessible areas for maintenance or in case shut down costs formaintenance is high.

  5. TYPICAL SYSTEMS IN THE MARKET • Two coat systems with zinc silicate or zinc rich epoxy as first coat. • Three coat systems. ATTRACTIVE BENEFITS OF 2-COAT SYSTEMS • Higher cost easily offset by savings in labour and time to contractors. • Projects of short time period to complete application. • Project end-users are inclined specifying coatings that will last longer.

  6. HOWEVER • Severe coating failures with a Polysiloxane topcoat reported after 2-5 years in offshore. • The main damage is a breakdown of the Polysiloxane topcoat in a two-coat zinc epoxy / Polysiloxanesystem where dft. and stripe coating requirements were not met. • A combination of internal stress, lack of flexibility and decreased adhesion are considered to be the possible cause of failures. • Generally Polysiloxane technology has not proved to provide a risk free technology for 15-20 years service. • Polysiloxane show a wide difference in formulations, hence have different properties differ widely in performance, • Products with proper qualifications a proven history are available on the market. • Where toughness and flexibility beyond the yield point of steel is required, polyurethane coating provide better services.

  7. Flexibility? Hard coatings • Reduced friction damage • Abrasion resistant • Follows steel elongation Flexible coatings • Reduced transport damage • Abrasion resistant (tough) • Follows bended or dented steel SNCF 2500 times 20 mm /32 KN / 2000 cycl Zinc Epoxy / Polysiloxane and Epoxy- Alu / Polysiloxane

  8. SIGMADUR 1800 Flexibility (Mandrel) – ISO 1519 But flexible? Flexible? SIGMADUR 1800 8

  9. A traditional polyurethane Styrene block is weakness in UV exposure: • Gloss retention • Discoloration • Chalking Styrene 30-40 % Acrylate 60-70 % The typical building block: styrene / acrylate 9

  10. Sigmadur1800 SigmaKalon’s“State of the Art” polyurethane Styrene free!, weakness eliminated. Longer durability in UV: • Enhanced gloss retention • Enhanced discoloration • Enhanced chalking resistance Branched vinyl 30-40 % Acrylate 60-70 % Branched vinyl/acrylate building block 10

  11. Sigmadur1800 • Not “just” a polyurethane! • What is it and Why? • Let’s have a look inside. 11

  12. PPG’s branched vinyl Technology • Why is branched vinyl technology unique? • PPG is only manufacturer to make this binder through innovative in-house technology • The cutting edge branched vinyl technology is embedded in SIGMADUR 1800 12
