  1. Professional Student Organizations Bourns College of Engineering University of California, Riverside http://www.engr.ucr.edu/~coelc

  2. 14 Professional Undergraduate Student Organizations • Leadership Council • ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) • AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) • AWMA (Air and Waste Management Association) • ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) • BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society) • EWB (Engineers Without Border) • IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) • NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) • SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) • SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) • SWE (Society of Women Engineers) • TBP (Tau Beta Pi) – Honors Society • MRS (Material Research Society) – Pending

  3. Leadership Council • The purpose of BCOELC is to serve as a liaison between the student organizations and the administration. • Our goal is to create and foster a governing body to strengthen the bonds between the organizations (both internal bonds and external bonds) as well as creating a link between/amongst the students, faculty, and staff. • BCOELC = your biggest resource and your biggest ally. • Activities: • Leadership Training (late September) • Fall Welcome (early October) • Engineering Week (late February) • Engineering Ball (early June)

  4. ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) • Mission • Build a CS community • Build leadership and professional skills • Make CS fun!!! • Goals &Accomplishments • Develop company relationships • Increase visibility • Increase participation • Committees • Web Committee • Mentor Committee • Advertising Committee • Entertainment Committee What ACM offers: A+ Certification Workshop Guest Speakers Web development

  5. AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) • Open to all chemical, bioengineering and environmental engineering, and material science and engineering students. • Ease the transition from college to career. industry trips, • Hosts guest speakers and field trips to companies • Facilitates graduate student and professor informal gatherings • Sponsors member attendance at conferences

  6. AWMA (Air and Waste Management Association) • AWMA is an interdisciplinary club consisting of members from across the environmental fields (science, toxicology, and engineering). • It deals with the study of current environmental issues and the technology in place being researched to deal with these issues. • It is a highly active and growing club, offering professional test preparation for engineering students and participation in Engineers Week. • Goals include outreach to high schools and becoming more active in environmental research and remediation.

  7. ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) • ASME strives to prepare its members to be successful and responsible engineers. • Human Powered Vehicle Challenge • This requires ASME members to use modern computer modeling software to design a bicycle with an aerodynamic body. Members then fabricate a working bicycle from their design and race it against schools from across the west coast region.

  8. BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society) • BMES is a new student organization working on promoting bioengineering, networking amongst peers and other organizations, taking field trips to various related companies, participating in community outreach programs, and showing bioengineering in action with a projects group.

  9. EWB (Engineers Without Border) • Humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. • This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students. • These projects are initiated by, and completed with, contributions from the host community working with our project teams.

  10. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) • IEEE strives to provide students with professional development and academic achievement opportunities. • Our activities include: • Hands-on robotics workshops, • Intramural sports to encourage interaction with campus society; • IEEE national competitions to interact and compete with IEEE members from other schools; • Professional development events facilitate the transition from school to the workforce; • Outreach events in the local community.

  11. NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) • NSBE is well known for being an organization that truly fulfills its mission statement: excelling academically, succeeding professionally, and positively impacting the community. • NSBE also offers scholarship awards, opportunities for community service, social events, study jams, and participation in national and regional conferences.

  12. SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) • SHPE is the leading social-technical organization whose primary function is to enhance and achieve the potential of Hispanics in engineering, math and science. • We will fulfill our mission by increasing educational opportunities, promoting professional and personal growth, carry out our social responsibility to be involved in education, business and government issues and enhancing pride within our organization and reinforcing our reputation as a vital Hispanic organization.

  13. SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) • SAE competes in two national events each year, Mini Baja and Formula SAE. • Each event is an intercollegiate engineering design competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). • Students design, fabricate and assemble the entire vehicle using state-of-the-art software and equipment made available by the Mechanical Engineering Department at UCR. • Students also work in teams to develop valuable skills in communication, time management, budgeting and meeting deadlines.

  14. SWE encourages young girls and undergraduate women to pursue careers in engineering through the development of programs that enhance their leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. • SWE promotes the engineering profession as a positive force within the College through community service and outreach. • There are also opportunities to attend regional and national conferences where many of the members find jobs and meet women engineers. • The club holds quarterly social events. Membership is not limited to women; men are encouraged to join too.

  15. TBP (Tau Beta Pi) • Tau Beta Pi is the only national engineering honor society that aspires to honor both character and academics representing all disciplines of engineering. • Our chapter desires to promote interest in engineering by providing a tutoring program for introductory engineering courses as well as connecting members with Tau Beta Pi alumni and other engineering students. • We provide workshops for professional development and team building skills through Engineering Futures and social events throughout the year to encourage networking.

  16. Outreach Events • Bourns College of Engineering & Girl Scouts Summer Camps: • “Minds for Design” • “Engineer IT Girl – Robotics!” • Society of Women Engineers (SWE): • Bourns Space Science and Engineering Day • “WOW! That’s Engineering” Day • Read Across America Day • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE): • Merit Badge Fairs • Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES): • Kids Klub for elementary students
