  1. Stato Tracker • Cooling refurbishment • Interventi in YB0 • Pianificazione attivita’ ’09 • Richieste E. Focardi

  2. General Status • Last components (tanks) arrived at Cern by Easter. • SS1 distribution lines cabinet (180 lines) moved to the pit before Easter. Connection of the Cu pipes completed at the end of April Currently under way the leak rate test under pressure In parallel, check on the control signals under way. Commissioning starting this week • SS2 distribution lines cabinet moved to the pit on April 22nd. Connection of the Cu pipes completed by this week Commissioning starting in two weeks. • Cooling plants readiness review on May 13th • Goal: Cooling plants released to the Tracker by the end of May. E. Focardi

  3. Manifolds • Production done by VCS (Italy). QA procedure used: bi-weekly visit in the Company by F. Raffaelli and M. Caccioppoli (Cern welder): Boroscope inspection and X-ray result check on the weldings. High quality reached. Few % rejected. Production completed by the end of March (some delay due to QA process) • They have been welded to their supporting structure by Cosmi. E. Focardi

  4. Final distribution lines • The production was completed mid March. • 230 Cu pipes, 230 supply lines and 230 return lines were produced. • About 15% of spares. • L. Demaria and M. Galanti were in charge of the QA. • The quality overall is very good. • 10% of the welded assemblies have been He tested successfully. • In order to speed up the manifolds assembly, a preassembly of the lines was done (put together the different welded components, the shutoff valves and the pneumatic actuators). • The job has been supervised by G. Dirkes at Bld. 187. Supply lines E. Focardi Return lines

  5. Manifolds assembly • the manifolds were mounted on their support structure and the installation of the valve modules, the shutoff valves and the return lines connection pieces was done. • Brand new shutoff valves were installed. • Thanks to the experience of Giulio, Damiano, Mark, Gary, Filippo and Sergio (techs from INFN and Fermilab), a lot of little integration problems were solved. • Norbert Frank supervised the pressure and leak tests done after a manifold was assembled. • The final pressure (15 bars for 1 hour) test has been successfully carried out. • The leak rate test/manifold followed (5*10E-3 mbar l/sec reached) • Cu pipes connection done on surface. VCR connection to the manifold SS1 Cu pipes connection E. Focardi

  6. Each pipe bundle carries pipes from several subdetectors. • The connections on top are grouped by subdetector. Piping layout on top Previous situation. Current situation Easier pipe insulation after connection E. Focardi

  9. Additional Instrumentation I From A. Kaminskiy • Motivation • Monitor the components of the cooling plants. • Low temperature operation • Measure the cooling system’s performance. • New sensors for All plants • Temperature of pumps and motors • Pressure after pump • Temperature and humidity in the boxes • New sensors for SS1 and SS2 • New tank level meters • Extended monitoring of heat exchangers New PLC code was requested (EN/CV). This part is at checking level. Soon, starts SS1 commissioning E. Focardi

  10. Instrumentation: Level monitoring for SS1 and SS2(from A. Kaminskiy) Ultrasonic level switches for SS1 and SS2 • Works OK with C6F14 • Sensible to the magnetic filed at the level of >300Gauss • With specially designed shielding works up to 850Gauss Radar level meter • Electrical test is done • Test with C6F14 and for compatibility with magnetic field will be done this week E. Focardi

  11. Cooling plant commissioning Established protocol, prepared by EN/CV/DC (EDMS 991669 is the Pixels plant version), including: • Electrical & functionality check of sensors (can start next week for SS1) • Pneumatic check of valves • Functionality check of the plant in by-pass • Performance test of the plant in by-pass • Regulation and functionality check of the plant with loops open Operation ranges: minimum possible T and max load with cooling loops closed. All requirements in terms of performances/functionalities defined in agreement with CV/DC in a common document (EDMS 991171) Timing:2-3 weeks for SS1, 2-3 weeks for SS2: work can proceed in parallel on the two plants if needed • DCS interface testing: check all functions are implemented and working, check different access levels (3 days?) • Balancing: 2 days x plant, without detector After these steps: cooling plant available for run with the detector at T>0°C. E. Focardi

  12. Leak search • All the cooling lines tested for Ar leaks. • Few lines needed some attention. • A check was done pressurizing these lines with C3F8 and CO2. • In two cases some of these gases were found in the TK volume • These measurements are suffering from the fact that some liquid is • remaining inside the pipes. E. Focardi

  13. Other activities inside YB0 Result: RH <5% E. Focardi

  14. Other activities inside YB0 (2) E. Focardi

  15. TK checkout without cooling • The sealing works (PP1+bulkhead) could have moved accidentally some TK cable connections • 100 % channels tested with an ‘ad hoc’ procedure that keeps the power groups on for only 10 s. • Intervention on 3 power groups, insertion of a ‘Lazarus’ board, resurrected those channels. • Few more problems to be investigated (db-swap,..) E. Focardi

  16. Pixel FPIX: Repair completed successfully before Easter within the schedule. Pixel cooling plant was also refurbished: distribution lines replaced and small other improvements. Leak rate with fluid it is at very low level. E. Focardi

  17. Other Tracker P5 activities • Commissioning environmental system (thermal screen, heating wires) • Improve reliability, uptime and integration (within the Tracker and with CMS) • of DAQ, DCS and in general of Tracking Systems. • - Integration of Pixel/Strips Tracker DCS near completion. • - DAQ/online developments progressing on several fronts. • - Optimization of Pixel/Strips DQM and data certification ongoing. • In general the shutdown activities are progressing very well and the plan established at the beginning of the year is getting completed within the schedule. • The time allocated to commission the Tracker is short. • Well supported and coordinate effort to be ready for CRAFT (July). E. Focardi

  18. Tracker DPG activities • 1. Finalize the CRAFT analysis results and write the performance papers. • 2. Complete software developments for the CMSSW 3.1 release. • 3. Review startup physics analyses with early collisions data. • 4. Review workflows and organization of Tracker offline operations for 2009/10. • Reviewing situation for manpower and critical tasks. E. Focardi
