  4. SCRIPTURE READING: Hosea 11:1-11

  5. When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up inmy arms;

  6. but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who life infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shallbe their king,

  7. because they have refused to return to me. The sword rages in their cities, it consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their schemes. My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does notraise them upat all.

  8. How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not againdestroy Ephraim;

  9. for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. They shall go after the Lord, who roars like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west. They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt,

  10. and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the Lord.

  11. *CALL TO WORSHIP • L: Sisters and Brothers, as we enter worship this day, I hope you know of God’s love. • P: We know, but long to know God’s love more fully, more deeply.

  12. L: God’s love is so deep that God seeks you out, searches for you. P: May we be found by the Creator this hour. L: Our God never gives up on you. P: May we never give up on God.

  13. L: Our God is a God of Reckless Love. P: May we feel, understand and experience that love, today and every day. L: Let us enter God’s presence with praise and thanksgiving.

  23. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Holy God, the one who seeks out the lost and the sinners: Hi, you have found some right here. Though we try to follow your rule of Love,

  24. too many times we turn to the rule of selfishness, anger, pride, arrogance, and snarkiness. Too often we “get back at” people, and hold grudges when we should forgive;

  25. too often we hoard our blessings instead of sharing what you have granted us. Forgive us, Merciful One. Encourage our hearts to trust in you and rely on you.

  26. Give us another chance to share your amazing grace and love with others. • (silence is observed for individual reflection and prayer)

  27. ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: Here is the good news, sisters and brothers: God is Love, and in God’s love is mercy and forgiveness. Know this day that you are forgiven.

  32. Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ So he told them this parable: ‘Which one of you, having ahundred sheep andlosing one of them,

  33. does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them,

  34. “Rejoice with me, for I have foundmy sheep that was lost.” Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance. Or what woman having ten silver coins, ifshe loses one ofthem,

  35. does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.” Just so, I tell you, there is joy in thepresence of theangels of God
