BACKGROUND • The importance of domestic tourism for making planning and decision in the tourism sector • As a main component in compiling the TSA, both national and regional • Data of domestic tourist is obtained from National Socio Economic Survey (NSES), which is done quarterly since 2011 (before it is carried out annually)

  3. 1. BACKGROUND (continued) The sample for each quarter : 75,000 households Fromthe NSES, we only get the total number of domestics tourist quarterly (VSEN.K Block IVA) The figure of household trip from this survey become a sampling frame for the module trip survey

BACKGROUND (continued) • The purpose of domestics survey (module trip) is to get the profile/characteristics. length of stay. and the expenditure of domestics tourism • The survey covers 91 regency/municipality in all 33 province in Indonesia • Enumeration carried out using questionnaire VRTJ 2013

  5. 2. METHODOLOGY A. Selection of Regency/Municipality From a sampling frame of regency/municipality, a sample of 91 regency/municipality is selected with Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) with a size number of household trips. B. Selection of Household • Sampling frame is a frame of the sample regency/municipality that are equipped with information on the number of households trip (From NSES KOR)

  6. 2. METHODOLOGY (continued) • select the sample of households trip with the systematic sampling, with the criteria: the main purpose of trip/visit • The household elected then become the respondent of the survey • The sampling size for the survey is around 6,700 (3,300 (Q1) and 3,400 (Q2))

  7. 3. CONCEPT AND DEFINITION DOMESTIC TOURIST: • Indonesia resident who travels voluntarily within Indonesia territory outside his/her usual environment. less than 6 (six) monthsand his/her purpose of travel is not for studying or earning wages and salaries in the place visited, and he/she • Travels to commercial tourism object, and or • Stays in hotel or commercial accommodation, and or • The distance of round trip is equal or more than 100 km

Flow of Domestic Survey

  9. Questionnaire

  10. 4. CONSTRAINT AND CHALLENGING • size of sample: could not be used to estimate domestic tourist for regional level (too small) • limitation of budget: it could not be done every year • Sample coverage: (majority in low and middle income) • In 2015, the NSES will carried out twice a year (March and September), then the information about domestic tourist only captured in March (loss the seasonal)

  11. 5. OTHER APPROACHES • Using the accommodation survey to get the information about domestic tourist (V-HTL) • Collect the hotel guest by foreign and national • Using the information from domestic transportation (sea, land, and air) of number of passenger

  12. 5. OTHER APPROACHES (continued) • Collect information from the tourism object (number of visitors) • Conduct survey in border line and in tourism object, to get the comprehensive information (need more budget) • Others…..
