What is CPT? • Curricular practical training is an integral part of an F1 student’s established curriculum which allows students to training through work experience (internships). • What is the difference between CPT and an internship? • Register for an Internship Course to apply for CPT. • CPT is for educational training first, employment second.

  4. Eligibility for CPT • To be Eligible, you must have: • Maintained legal immigration student status. • Been enrolled as a full time student for at least one full academic year (see below). • Transfer students can use their time from previous school if from the same type of program. • Students must receive credits for the internship or training. • Been formally offered and accepted an internship. • Please note: Spring and Fall semesters equal 1 academic year. You can also combine Summer 1, 2 and Fall to make an academic year. Spring semester plus summer 1 and 2 does not equal a full academic year for the purpose of CPT.

  5. CPT Regulations • CPT is authorized one semester at a time. • Lose OPT after 12 months of full time CPT. • This cannot happen with our Program’s CPT • You are still an F1 student while on CPT • Must be enrolled for an internship course during the semester of requested CPT. • Authorized for a specific employer, location, and period of time approved in SEVIS on the CPT I-20. • CPT must be authorized on the I-20 prior to the start date of employment.

  6. CPT Enrollment Requirements • Fall and Spring Semesters: • Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week): • Undergraduate: must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours including the internship. • Graduate: must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours including the internship course and one in-class or hybrid course. Cannot do an internship with only an online course.  • Full-time CPT (up to 40 hours per week): • Undergraduate: must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours including the internship. • Graduate: must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours including the internship course and one in-class, hybrid course, or online course. • Only Online courses with internship: Students must have academic advisor approval that the internship is suitable for maintaining full time status. • Summer I or II: • Undergraduate and Graduate: • Can do full or part-time CPT • There are no other course requirements as long as the student is not graduating in August.  If the student is graduating in August then the summer session must be treated like the regular fall and spring semesters.

  7. CPT and the End of your Program • CPT is available DURING your degree program (done before you graduate). • CPT must end prior to the end of your program • Students cannot extend degree programs to take CPT. • Cannot take only an internship class during last semester.

  8. Summer Internship Options if Graduating • Graduating Summer I: • 5 Week Internship course (Summer I) • Online Class • Full-time CPT • Graduating Summer II • 12 Week Internship course (Summer I & II) • Online Class during Summer II • Full-time CPT • 5 Week Internship course (Summer II) • Online Class • Full-time CPT

Applying for CPT • Meet with you advisor to discuss enrolling in an internship class. • Read CPT information on the SAU website. https://web.saumag.edu/international/information/curricular-practical-training-cptinternships/ • Fill out the online application. • Read the Learning Content pages. • Take the CPT quiz. You must get 100% on the quiz to apply for CPT. • Request and receive a recommendation from your advisor (request and approval is completed through the portal). • Complete the CPT Questionnaire. • Upload your Employer’s Training Letter (template provided within the application). • Upload your unofficial transcript or schedule showing you are registered for an internship course. • Click submit.

  10. CPT Authorization Process • Expect this process to take up to 7 business days. • This may take longer if there are errors in your application. • The ISS Office will not accept any CPT authorization request that is submitted less than 7 days from the selected start date. • You will be provided with a new I-20 when your CPT authorization request has been fulfilled. • Do not start working until you have received your new I-20. Starting to work before you have received your CPT I-20 is a violation of status. • You will need to submit a new CPT authorization request if there are any changes in your employment
