  1. F451 Critical Essay • Key Features for a critical essay: • An arguable thesis- A critical essay is a form of argument; you are arguing that your analysis is valid. Avoid summary! • Careful attention to the language of the text- Specific words, images, metaphors- these are where the analysis begins. The words that make up the text are your primary source. Close reading and attention to detail is a must.

  2. F451 Critical Essay • Attention to pattern or themes- A critical analysis is built on evidence of meaningful patterns or themes within a text. The patterns and themes reveal a deeper meaning. • A clear interpretation- A critical analysis demonstrates the plausibility of its thesis by using evidence from the text. You are showing one way that the text can be read and understood.

  3. F451 Critical Essay • The Rhetorical Triangle:

  4. F451 Critical Essay • Generating Ideas and Text: • Look at the requirements of the assignment. Be sure to understand all parts of the assignment. • Study the text with a critical eye. • Choose a method for analyzing the text. • Reread parts of the text more than once.

  5. F451 Critical Essay • Compose a strong thesis- The thesis should be specific, limited, and open to potential disagreement. It should be analytical and not evaluative. Avoid thesis statements that are overly judgmental. • Do a close reading- Find short, specific examples that support your interpretation. Interpret those passages in terms of their language, context, and your reaction as a reader.

  6. F451 Critical Essay • Find evidence- Well supported and well argued opinions depend on strong evidence. Avoid long quotes; consider embedding your examples. The evidence backs up the assertion you are making in your thesis statement. • Matters of style- Make assertions directly. Discuss the textual features in present tense and the historical context in the past.

  7. F451 Critical Essay • Cite sources appropriately- Use MLA citations in a critical essay. For example, “here is my direct quote” (Bradbury 45). • Consider your format- intro , thesis, topic sentences, lead-ins/I, strong examples/quotes/R, strong explanation that connects back to your thesis statement/E, closing sentences/clinchers, and conclusion.
