  8. IEEE 802.11 Standards - Wireless • IEEE 802.11a, provides 54Mbps data rate at 5GHz. • IEEE 802.11b, or Wi-Fi, has a maximum data rate of 11Mbps, at 2.4GHz. • IEEE 802.11g, provides 54Mbps data rate at 2.4GHz. • IEEE 802.11n, aproposed standard to provide 540 Mbps data rate at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, usingMIMO (Multiple-In, Multiple-Out) • MIMO transmits two or more data streams in the same radio channel at the same time. • With MIMO, the maximum data rate per channel grows linearly with the number of different data streams that are transmitted in the same channel.

  9. 6 6 6 1 1 1 1 11 11 11 802.11b & g Extended Geographic Coverage using 3 - Channel Layout Three non-overlapping channel frequencies in a non-adjacent configuration allows maximum coverage of a geographic area without cross channel interference and ensures complete RF coverage. Channels 1, 6, and 11 most popular configuration for this type of layout. Other combinations are possible.

  10. Typical Site Survey Process • Obtain floor plan / campus site map • Visually inspect the floor plan • Identify user areas on the floor plan • Identify potential problems areas on floor plan • Identify Access-Point locations and Antenna types • Document all findings

  11. Typical Site Survey Tools • Laptop or PDA with Wireless adaptor • Site Survey Software for Wireless • Access-Points • RF Analyzer • Two-Way Communication Devices • Antennas – Variety of types • Distance measuring devices • Handheld GPS device with cordinence measurement capabilities
