  1. The Kawashima Family Trial Dillon Maya Lars Ismael

  2. Opening Statement • Two main flaws • About 3am, fire • Kawashimas running out of house with possessions • The Masudas were found dead • House under police guard after fire • Kawashimas would have moved belongings out of building before fire if they had started it • Money box guarded and Kawashimas wouldn’t have been able to get to it.

  3. Evidence • The skin found under Mrs. Masuda’s fingernails matched the skin from Goro’s face • Goro was fired from his job at the warehouse and grew angry • Morita was spotted at the warehouse the night the fire broke out.

  4. Evidence Continued • Morita claimed that fireworks caused the burn on his neck, but no fireworks permits were issued. • Ko had hit a man with a burning stick the night of the fire. • Morita went to the doctor’s the night after the fire to get help for his burn

  5. Evidence Continued • Junko Masuda grew angry when she found out she was not the heir to the Masuda fortune. • Yoko, Ko and Hideyo had nothing to gain from burning the warehouse down or murdering the Masudas. They would only lose their home and the only kindness they had in Japan.

  6. Closing Statement • The Kawashima family is innocent because the skin in Mrs. Masuda’s fingernails matched the skin from Goro’s face. This means that Goro had been in the room with Mrs. Masuda during the fire, because Mrs. Masuda’s lungs were filled with smoke. This means that she was still alive and breathing when the fire started. Goro must have been in the room with her during this time because she scratched him on his face in defense. Goro worked for the Masudas in the past, but was fired for being lazy. He came back asking for his old job many times, and was denied each time. Morita was spotted near the warehouse late at night before the fire broke out. Ko found him in the outhouse and she hit him in the face with a burning stick in defense.

  7. Doctor Yamada said that Morita came to him the day after the fire with a burn on his face, saying it was caused by a fireworks accident. But Sergeant Kudo stated that there had been no firework permits issued, meaning that Morita could not have been injured by fireworks. Junko Masuda is not listed as the heir to the Masuda fortune as she had expected to be. It would be convenient for her if the only will of the Masudas was destroyed in a fire. Therefore, the Yoko, Ko and Hideyo are innocent, because they have nothing to gain by burning down their home and murdering the only people who were kind to them when they arrived in Japan.
