  1. The Importance of Mass http://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=7GLLDLNX

  2. What is Mass? • The Mass is a combination of prayers and ceremonies that make up the service of the Eucharist.

  3. Where Does it Come From? • The Holy Eucharist was celebrated as Christ had instituted it at the Last Supper according to His command, in memory of Him.

  4. What are the Main Elements of the Mass? • We have three main elements that are essential in any Mass or Eucharist: • The sacrifice of Christ • The memorial of his death and resurrection • The festive banquet where we eat the Body of Christ and drink his Blood

  5. These parts are found most completely during communion where we honor Jesus sacrifice for us so that our sins are forgiven and we can achieve salvation or Heaven. We have the presence of our Lord literally inside us, this presence of God is something to be celebrated!

  6. The First Half of the Mass • The Mass starts with an opening hymn and sign of the cross. • We then have two readings: • 1 from the Old Testament • 2 from the letters in the New Testament

  7. The third reading which is always read by the priest is from one of the gospels. • The priest then does a discussion or reflection on what the messages are for us as believers on how to stay both holy and connected to God.

  8. Next we have a short group prayer on the needs of the community. • Here we reach a virtual halfway point. Collection baskets are passed around and the bread and wine are brought to the front for the second half of mass.

  9. The Second Half of Mass • The second half of mass is often focused on the changing of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. • We say the Our Father which is an example of a prayer Jesus gave us. • We offer peace to each other in imitation of Christ.

  10. We go through the communion lines to take part in the Lord’s supper. • We end the mass as we have started with the sign of the cross and then a final hymn as the priest exists the front area.

  11. The Different Types of Prayer Located in Mass There are 5 Main Types of Prayer

  12. Adoration • In prayers of adoration or worship, we praise the greatness of God, and we acknowledge our dependence on him in all things.

  13. Expiation (Contrition) • In a prayer of expiation or contrition, we acknowledge our sinfulness and ask God for His forgiveness and mercy.

  14. Love • Prayers of love or charity are just that—expressions of our love for God, the source and object of all love. Acts of Charityare perhaps the best examples of a prayer of love. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maqOpMXnDjQ • Over saved Video

  15. Petition Prayers of petition are the type of prayer we are most familiar with. In them, we ask God for things we need—primarily spiritual needs, but physical ones as well. Our prayers of petition should always include a statement of our willingness to accept God's will, whether He directly answers our prayer or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-vB8sl3EFE The Office Inappropriate Petition

  16. Thanksgiving • Perhaps the most neglected type of prayer is prayer of thanksgiving. WhileGrace Before Mealsis a good example of a prayer of thanksgiving, we should get into the habit of thanking God throughout the day for the good things that happen to us and to others.
