  1. INSTYTUT METEOROLOGII I GOSPODARKI WODNEJ INSTITUTE OF METEOROLOGY AND WATER MANAGEMENT TITLE: IMGW in COSMO AUTHOR: Michał Ziemiański DATA: 18.09.2008

  2. INSTITUTE OF METEOROLOGY AND WATER MANAGEMENT • IMGW strategy for NWP: • increase the engagement of IMGW in the area of the NWP development, • strengthen the cooperation between IMGW and academia (esp. Warsaw UniversityofTechnology and University of Warsaw), • build international cooperation with important NWP centres (NCAR, ECMWF – membership probably from 2010), • increase computational capabilities based on own Linux-cluster environment and cooperation with academic computational centres (Poznań, Gdańsk), • increase and concentrate resources on well defined areas of model development (esp. dynamics, assimilation).

  3. INSTITUTE OF METEOROLOGY AND WATER MANAGEMENT • Achievements over the last COSMO year: • 1dVar: incorporation of nudging mode, implementationof AMSU-A,B data nudging, • UTCS: tests of modifications in the COSMO-model deep convection Tiedtke’s scheme, • VERSUS: porting of Common Verification Suite package, preparation of the VERSUS package for delivery, • KENDA: participation in implementation of an ensemble data assimilation framework, modification of model code, • INTERP:development of hydrological products based on COSMO model, “fuzzy” verification of very high resolution model.

  4. INSTITUTE OF METEOROLOGY AND WATER MANAGEMENT • Status of the NWP system: • 14-km grid resolution, COSMO reference model version, • no assimilation cycle, • boundary and initial conditions from GME, • hardware: SGI 3800.

  5. INSTITUTE OF METEOROLOGY AND WATER MANAGEMENT • Future development of the NWP system: • moving to Linux cluster environment (2008/2009), • operational implementation of the 7-km resolution in 2009, • semi-operational implementation of 2.8 km resolution for selected, • small-area sub-domains (2009/2010), • implementation of the assimilation cycle (2009/2010), • implementation of operational 2.8 km resolution (2012/2013, depending mainly on hardware availability).

  6. INSTITUTE OF METEOROLOGY AND WATER MANAGEMENT • Future contributions to COSMO: • new COSMO-oriented team (about 2-3 persons) dedicated to implementation of the EULAG, finite volume based, dynamical core to the COSMO model, • strong involvement in 1-d var assimilation of satellite data, • involvement in programs/projects/tasks of general interest to the consortium (data assimilation, convection parameterization, verification, etc). • Thank you …
