  3. Hydrocarbons Hydrocarbons are organic compounds of hydrogen and carbon in various combinations. 95% of all hydrocarbons are burned as fuels because the combustion reaction is exothermic (releases heat).

  4. Naming The naming of hydrocarbons follows a specific pattern: Recall that carbon has 4 valence electrons so it has the ability to combine with 4 other non-metals. The simplest hydrocarbon is methane. CH4 methane C2H6 ethane C3H8 propane C4H10 butane

  5. Naming Hydrocarbons with 5 or more carbons follow the same pattern and are named using the prefixes we are already used to:

  7. Combustion In simplest terms, combustion is: fuel + oxygen  oxides + energy There are two types of combustion and it depends on the abundance of oxygen.

  8. Complete Combustion there is a good supply of oxygen and all the fuel is consumed. Clean reaction hydrocarbon + oxygen gas  carbon dioxide + water + energy

  9. Incomplete Combustion If there is a poor supply of oxygen The reaction is still exothermic but does not generate as much energy. ‘dirty reaction’ hydrocarbon + oxygen gas  carbon dioxide + carbon + carbon monoxide + water + energy
