  2. Ensconce(verb) Definition: to put into a safe place When I’m camping, I love the feeling of snug warmth when I’m ensconced in my sleeping bag.

  3. Strident(adjective) Definition: harsh and loud. An excellent drill sergeant needs to use a strident voice and stern attitude.

  4. Contrite(adjective)(contritely, contrition) Definition: feeling or showing sorrow and remorse for an action or shortcoming. We became contrite and very polite to our parents after breaking our midnight curfew.

  5. Belligerence(noun)(belligerent) Definition: an aggressive, stubborn attitude My golden retriever’s routine belligerence includes chewing shoes, harassing our cat, and refusing to be housebroken. We’ve signed her up for an obedience class!

  6. Malevolently(adverb)(malevolent, malevolence) Definition: doing something with ill will or intent. Clearly, the filmmaker malevolently attacked Mohammad in his movie, unwittingly provoking Muslims to attack U.S. embassies overseas.

  7. Effigy(noun) Definition: a crude figure representing a hated person. We burnt an effigy of our most despised teacher on Halloween night.

  8. Menace(noun, verb)(menacing) Definition: n. – a potential danger; v. – to provoke or harass; to cause a potential danger. This is perhaps the most menacing presence in the forest to a mouse, chipmunk, or squirrel.

  11. Bravado(noun) Definition: foolish show of bravery; foolhardiness. My brother is always full of bravado when facing any sort of danger. He’s also broken just about every bone in his body!

  12. Fervor(noun) Definition: passionate intensity Yemeni protesters have attacked the U.S Embassy with fervor.

  13. Assimilating(verb) Definition: taking into or incorporating into a larger group, organization, concept, etc. When one moves to a foreign country, it can be hard work to assimilate to that country’s culture and expectations of its citizens.

  14. Talisman(noun) Definition: an object believed to have a magical power It used to be quite common to have a rabbit’s foot as a talisman ensuring good luck.

  15. Sauntered(verb) Definition: to casually stroll, with the connotation of having a bit of “attitude” Leighanne and Cara sauntered into class over one minute late to see what Ms. Hart’s reaction would be. They were faced with a closed door!

  16. Torrid(adjective) Definition: scorching hot Sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats helped obscure us from the torrid sun on the shores of St. John.

  17. Purged(verb) Definition: to be cleaned or freed of I’m purging my room of every last item I no longer use in an attempt to make my life clutter-free!

  18. Decorum(noun) Definition: proper manners and “good” taste. At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, decorum is demanded of everyone present.

  19. Vitality(noun) Definition: vigor and strength needed for survival Youth often take their innate vitality for granted, not realizing how fleeting it is!

  20. Inscrutable(adjective)(inscrutably) Definition: not easily understood, especially from one’s expression or actions. One should maintain a neutral, inscrutable expression while playing poker so as not to reveal the nature of one’s hand.

  21. Recrimination(noun) Definition: a retaliatory accusation. During the upcoming presidential debates, recriminations will be flying between the podiums.

  23. Mortification(noun) Definition: feeling of shame or humiliation. Only after giving my speech did I realize my zipper had been down the entire time, causing me days and days of utter mortification.

  24. Indignant(adjective) Definition: describing being upset over something unjust or unworthy. I became indignant when my basketball team tried to blame the loss on my playing when clearly we had faced a far superior team of players.

  25. Specious(adjective) Definition: deceptive; having a false look of truth. The salesperson made several specious claims about the SUV’s fuel economy.

  26. Contemptuously(adverb) Definition: behaving as though other people are inferior or useless. Williston’s soccer team glanced at us contemptuously as we came out on the field. It felt great to beat them!

  27. Impervious(adjective) Definition: unable to be penetrated or otherwise affected “I’m impervious to Ms. Hart’s threats to hang me like a cheap piñata, but I do fear what she might sneak into my brownies,” Hayden said.
